Women's Tennis Drops Six-Hour Match to Washington State, 4-3

PULLMAN, Wash. The No. 57 (ITA) Boise State women’s tennis team put on a marathon of a match against No. 44 Washington State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at WSU. The Broncos battled through a grueling six-hour match only to finish in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss.

The Broncos (3-3) were able to gain the early lead over the Cougars (8-1) winning the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk were the first to earn a win, defeating Bianca Selaru and Jessica Gomez, 8-0, in the No. 3 doubles match. BSU’s Laura Baum and Jana Mackova topped Aleksandra Stefanova and Aleksandra Cekic in the No. 2 doubles match, while Pichittra Thongdach and Polina Kokoulina defeated Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova in the No. 1 match, both with scores of 8-6.

In singles play, WSU was able to win four of the six matches to seal the team win. They first evened the score with Stefanova defeating Jochimsen, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match. Boise State regained the lead with a 2-1 score after Wlodarczyk topped Selaru, 6-0, 7-5, in the No. 4 match. Helping the Broncos pull away to a 3-1 lead, Kokoulina defeated Kamendova at the No. 3 spot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

From there the Cougs’ took charge of the match with No. 65 Burduli fighting off Thongdach, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to seal the No. 1 victory. WSU’s Cekic made quick work of BSU’s Mackova in the No. 5 spot, winning 6-1, 6-3. With the team score at 3-3, the match came down to the No. 6 singles finish. In a battle for the history books WSU’s Gomez was able to hold off Bronco Stacey Housley, winning 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) to clinch the match for the Cougs.

With the loss the Broncos’ record comes to .500, with a 3-3 record on the season. BSU will look to improve on that record this coming weekend when they host unranked Idaho, Northern Arizona, and Wyoming in the Boise State Classic. The tournament is scheduled to begin Friday, February 22 and will run through Sunday, February 24 at the BSU Boas Tennis Center.
