No. 37 Boise State Women's Tennis Upset by No. 51 Utah, 4-3

SALT LAKE CITY The No. 37-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team suffered their second loss of the season on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-3 to No. 51-ranked Utah at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City. The Broncos now hold a 6-2 record, including a 0-2 record in away matches, while the Utes improve to a 3-3 record on the season.


The Broncos started off on the right foot, winning two of the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Boise State earned their first win with freshman Vivien Silfany and senior Klaudia Wlodarczyk earning an 8-2 victory over Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh in the No. 2 doubles match. The Broncos were able to clinch the doubles point shortly after with a win by freshman Lauren Megale and junior Pichittra Thongdach at the No. 1 spot, defeating Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson, 8-6.


The Utes were able to earn one doubles win at the No. 3 spot with Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan picking up a close, 8-7 (7-0), win over senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen.


In singles play, Megale helped the Broncos go up 2-0 right off the bat, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Kryuchkova in the No. 2 spot. Utah’s Lexi Provancha narrowed the team score to 2-1 when she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over freshman Rocio Frej in the No. 6 singles match. The Broncos were able to pick up their third team point in the No. 3 spot with Silfany earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over Monson.


The Utes, however, were able to win the remainder of the singles matches, pulling out a 4-3 win over the Broncos. With Boise State up 3-1 in the team running, Putilina earned an upset win over No. 104-ranked Thongdach, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 1 match to bring the team score to 3-2. Johnson brought the match to a tie in team scoring after she defeated Wlodarczyk, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 4 spot while Walsh fought to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over Jochimsen in the No. 5 match to clinch the team win for Utah.


The Broncos continue competition over the weekend, traveling to Boulder, Colo., to face the University of Colorado at 10 a.m. on Sat., Feb. 14.
