Women's Tennis Sweeps Eastern Washington, Utah to Improve to 2-1

BOISE, Idaho The No. 42 Boise State women’s tennis team got their 2008 home schedule off to an excellent start sweeping Eastern Washington and No. 67 University of Utah to better their season record to 2-1.

Looking for redemption from their 4-3 loss to Oregon earlier in the week, the Broncos (2-1) came out on fire winning all nine matches in their Saturday morning dual with EWU at the BSU Boas Tennis Center, winning 7-0. BSU fought off a tough Utah team on Saturday evening, winning 4-3 to earn their second win of the season.

In their morning match against the Eagles the Broncos were able to sweep the doubles matches to earn their first of seven points. At the No. 1 doubles spot, No. 40 Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach topped Kasey Knox and Amanda Mankovits in a quick 8-2 win. To sweep the doubles play, Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk earned an 8-3 victory over Sarah Leuenberger and Marie Demerath.

The Broncos continued to dominate in singles play, not allowing more than four games to be won by any Eagle in any set. At the No. 1 singles spot Thongdach topped Knox, 6-1, 6-4 while Kokoulina swatted down Dolack with a 6-1, 6-0 score in the No. 2 match. The Broncos second dual of the day proved to be much tougher, ending in a 4-3 Bronco win after four hours of play. The University of Utah was able to gain an early lead by clinching the doubles point. In the closest doubles match of the dual, Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok edged past Bronco duo Kokoulina and Thongdach, 8-5. In singles play, the Broncos earned four of the six wins to clinch the team title. Boise State evened the team score to 1-1 when No. 3 singles player Jochimsen plowed past Monson, 6-2, 6-2. From there the matches would be down to the wire with No. 6 singles winner Housley clinching the team win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Utah’s Karine Bourdages. Also winning for the Broncos, Mackova earned a 6-3, 7-6 win over Kwok in the No. 4 match while Wlodarczyk topped Walsh at the No. 5 spot with a 7-5, 6-4 score.
