Broncos Sweep Colorado State, Utah State to Remain Perfect at Home

BOISE, Idaho The No. 38-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team defended their home courts on Friday, picking up two 7-0 wins over ITA Central Region opponents, Colorado State and Utah State. The Broncos improve to 5-1 on the season, including a 4-0 record at their home courts in the Boas Tennis Center.

 

In their first match of the day, the Broncos were able to sweep all nine matches, to defeat the Rams, 7-0, and improve to 2-0 in their regional record after defeating Montana State two weeks ago. The Broncos began by producing a nearly perfect doubles competition, allowing only three games to the Rams in all three matches combined. In the No. 1 doubles match, freshman Lauren Megale and junior Pichittra Thongdach earned an 8-1 win over Lauren Strasburger and Tori Arneson. In the No. 2 match, senior Laura Baum and junior Bianca Jochimsen produced an 8-2 win over Laura Neal and Caitlin Fluegge. The Broncos’ Klaudia Wlodarczyk and Rocio Frej rounded out the Broncos’ efforts with a perfect 8-0 win over Greer Satherlie and Kirsten Stople.

 

The Broncos mixed up their order of play compared to their normal line-ups with Megale earning her first No. 1 singles spot where she downed Strasburger, 6-0, 6-1.  The Broncos’ normal No. 1 player, Thongdach, saw time in the No. 2 position on Friday, earning a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Neal. Wlodarczyk picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Arneson in the No. 3 spot while Baum earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Fluegge in the No. 4 spot. In the No. 5 spot, Frej downed Satherlie,, 6-2, 6-0, while Jana Mackova rounded out the Broncos’ perfect singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stople.

 

In their second match of the day, the Broncos faced Western Athletic Conference foe Utah State, winning 7-0 and improving to a 1-0 WAC record on the season. The match against the Aggies looked much like the match against the Rams earlier in the day with the Broncos sweeping all nine matches.

 

In doubles play, Thongdach was joined by Wlodarczyk in the No. 1 spot as a change in line-ups occurred for the second time during the day. The pair defeated Hailey Swenson and Bridgette Strickland, 8-0. Baum and Jochimsen remained together for doubles play at the No. 2 spot, defeating Monica Abella-Calleja and Carla Limon, 8-1, improving to 4-2 on the season together. Frej was joined by Mackova in the No. 3 spot, earning an 8-2 win over Britney Watts and Taylor Perry.

 

In singles play, Megale earned her second career win at the No. 1 spot, defeating Swenson, 6-3, 6-2, and improving to 5-1 on the season in singles matches. Jochimsen played at the No. 2 spot, downing USU’s Strickland, 6-4, 6-2. Wlodarczyk made quick work of Abella-Calleja in the No. 3 spot, winning 6-0, 6-1, while Frej earned a No. 4 singles win over Perry with the same score. Baum picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Limon in the No. 5 spot, while Mackova earned her second win of the day at No. 6 defeating Watts, 6-1, 6-0.

 

The Broncos continue their weekend of competition at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 7 when they face regional foe, Kansas State. A match between Colorado State and Utah State will be played prior to the Boise State match at 9 a.m. and Colorado State will also face Kansas State in a Sunday morning match a 9 a.m. All matches will be held at the Boas Tennis Center and are free of charge.
