Broncos Top Utah State to Open WAC Action

LOGAN, Utah - The No. 39 ranked Boise State women's tennis team earned its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season, Friday (Feb. 4) morning, as the Broncos (4-1 overall, 1-0 WAC) scored a 6-1 win over Utah State (1-1, 0-1) in Logan, Utah.

Boise State enjoyed a strong start against the Aggies, Friday, sweeping doubles competition before winning five or six singles matches in the dual. The Broncos won all five singles matches in straight sets to put a Utah State rally out of question quickly.

Boise State scored an early 1-0 advantage over the Aggies with wins in all three doubles matches. Lauren Megale and Marlena Pietzuch scored a win at No. 1 for the Broncos by beating Hailey Swenson and Romina Nedakovic, 8-5. At No. 2, Elyse Edwards and Sonia Klamczynska beat Jaclyn West and Kristina Voytsekhovich, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point for Boise State.

Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo would secure the doubles sweep next at No. 3 with an 8-5 win over Julie Tukuafu and Taylor Perry to give Boise State a full head of steam heading into singles action.

Megale kept things going for the Broncos at No. 1 singles as she beat West, 6-2, 7-5, to give the women a 2-0 lead in the dual. Jasper earned her first win of the indoor season next at No. 3 as she beat Voytsekhovich, 6-1, 6-2. Pietzuch secured the team win for Boise State with a strong showing at No. 4, as she beat Nedakovic, 6-1, 6-3.

Edwards and Morgan Basil managed to extend the Boise State lead with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, starting with Edwards 6-4, 6-3 victory against Tukuafu. Basil would sweep Brianna Harris, 6-0, 6-0 next at No. 6 to wrap up singles action for the Broncos.

Klamczynska suffered the lone loss of the day for Boise State in the most exciting match of the entire dual at No. 2 singles. After falling in the first set to Swenson, 5-7, she battle back to earn a 7-5 win in the second and force a tie breaker. The two fought back and forth but in the end it was Swenson that would score the 11-9 breaker to earn the 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 win.

Boise State is currently on a two dual road trip to Utah, which will conclude on Saturday (Feb. 5) when the Broncos square off against No. 73 BYU. The Broncos will meet the Cougars at noon in Provo, Utah.
