No. 38 Boise State Holds off No. 44 Harvard, 4-3

EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 38 ranked Boise State women's tennis team earned its second win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent, Sunday (Jan. 30), as the Broncos held off No. 44 Harvard for a 4-3 win at the ITA Kick-Off in Evanston, Ill.

Boise State (3-1 overall, 0-0 Western Athletic Conference) entered Sunday looking to rebound from a 5-2 loss against No. 34 Nebraska on Saturday. The loss to the Cornhuskers, which was their first of the season, ended the Broncos chances at qualifying to the 2011 ITA National Indoor Team Championships.

Boise State showed its resolve against the Crimson (1-2) as the Broncos won the doubles point and three of four singles matches to notch their biggest win so far this season. Stephanie Jasper and Sandy Vo gave Boise State an early advantage in doubles competition with an 8-5 win over Hannah Morril and Kristin Norton at No. 3 doubles. A loss at No. 1 would draw Boise State and Harvard even with just No. 2 doubles left to decide the ever crucial doubles point.

Answering the call for the Broncos was Elyse Edwards and Morgan Basil, who secured a hard fought win at No. 2 to give Boise State the early advantage in the dual. Edwards and Basil took down Natalie Blosser and Hideko Tachibana, 8-6, to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Harvard would respond quickly in singles with a win at No. 1 to even the team score at 1-1. Marlena Pietzuch made sure the tie didn't last long however, as she beat Blosser, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 to recapture the lead for Boise State.

Basil extended the Bronco lead to 3-1 next at No. 6, as she recorded her first dual singles win of the season by beating Morrill, 6-1, 6-3.

Harvard managed to answer one last time, winning at No. 3 singles to pull the team score to 3-2. Boise State made sure the Crimson wouldn't get any closer though, as Edwards earned the dual clinching victory at No. 5 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Samantha Gridley.

The Broncos continue a month long stretch of road duals next weekend with a trip to Utah to face Utah State and BYU. Boise State will face the Aggies on Friday (Feb. 4) in Logan, Utah in the first WAC dual of the year for the Broncos. The women will then travel Provo, Utah to meet BYU on Saturday (Feb. 5).
