No. 33 Boise State Shutout by No. 17 North Carolina, 7-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Day-one of the 2010 ITA Kick-Off in South Bend, Ind. did not go quite as planned for the No. 33 ranked Boise State women's tennis team, as the Broncos suffered their first loss of the indoor season, Saturday (Jan. 30) morning, dropping their dual against No. 17 North Carolina, 7-0.

Boise State (2-1) fell behind UNC (4-0) early after dropping all three doubles matches to the Tar Heels, who currently have three doubles teams ranked in the top-30 nationally. No. 6 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski withstood a strong effort from Boise State's No. 24 Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale to earn an 8-5 win in the No. 1 match.

In the No. 2 doubles match, No. 22 Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston took care of Bianca Jochimsen and Stephanie Jasper for an 8-3 win. In the final doubles match, UNC completed its' sweep with an 8-6 win by No. 28 Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm over Rocio Frej and Elyse Edwards.

Boise State's struggles continued in singles action as the Broncos lost five straight matches in straight sets to seal the UNC victory. At No. 6, Featherston beat Frej, 6-2, 6-1 for the first singles win by the Tar Heels. No. 25 Marand followed that up in the No. 2 match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lauren Megale.

The No. 5 match would finish next, which resulted in a 6-0, 6-3 win by Grabinski over Edwards. Jelena Durisic extended the Tar Heel lead to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jochimsen at No. 3. In the No. 4 match, Zoe De Bruycker beat Jasper, 6-3, 6-2. UNC's final win of the day came in the No. 1 match, as No. 100 Tsang upset No. 44 Thongdach with a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) final.

With the loss, Boise State falls out of the running for an appearance in the 2010 ITA National Indoor Team Championships. The Broncos are set to play the loser of No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 46 DePaul on Sunday morning.
