No. 33 Boise State Women Tennis Heads to ITA Kick-Off

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 33 Boise State women's tennis team will travel to South Bend, Ind. this weekend (Jan. 30-31) to take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off, with high hopes for earning a spot in the 2010 ITA National Indoor Team Championships.

            The Broncos will face No. 17 ranked North Carolina on Saturday at 10 a.m. Depending on which teams win or lose Boise State will then face either No. 6 Notre Dame or No. 46 DePaul on Sunday. Which ever team wins both their duals this weekend will automatically earn a spot at the national indoor team championships.

Last time out...

            Boise State (2-0) opened the 2010 indoor season in Bozeman, Mont. last weekend (Jan. 23) as the Broncos faced off against the University of Montana and Montana State in a pair of duals. Boise State enjoyed a flawless opening weekend, winning both duals by a score of 7-0.

            The Broncos did not drop a singles or doubles match against either opponent, en route to a clean sweep of the weekend.

Moving up in the rankings...

            The Broncos moved up one spot in the Campbell's/ITA Team Rankings after a 2-0 start to the season. Boise State enters this weekend ranked No. 33 in the country. The Broncos were voted No. 34 to start the spring after finishing 2009 at No. 34. The ITA team rankings will continue to come out weekly throughout the season, while the singles and doubles rankings will come out every other week starting Feb. 18.

Looking at the Tar Heels...

            North Carolina enters this weekend with a 3-0 record after facing a trio of duals last weekend (Jan. 20-24). The Tar Heels have recorded wins over No. 70 Winthrop (7-0) No. 34 Kentucky (6-1) and No. 69 Minnesota (7-0).

            UNC is led in singles by Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang, who were both voted in the top-100 for singles in the Jan. 5 ITA individual rankings. Marand started the season at No. 25, while Tsang was No. 100.

            The Tar Heels are expected to be extremely dominant in doubles as well, with three different doubles teams ranked in the top-30 nationally. Marand and Sophie Grabinski lead the way at No. 6, while Tsang and Shinann Featherston are No. 22. Rounding out the group is Haley Hemm and Jocelyn Ffriend at No. 28.

The ITA Kick-Off

            The second-annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend is a collegiate tennis event that gives 60 teams from around the country the opportunity to play for a berth in the 2010 ITA National Indoor Team Championships. The field has been broken into four-team tournaments that will be played out at 15 different college campuses.

            Teams have been seeded 1-4 at all 15 locations, with the top seed playing the four seed to open the weekend. The two day-one winners will play on Saturday for the right to play at the indoor team championships.
