Women's Tennis Captures Season Opener Win Over Montana State

BOISE, Idaho The No. 45-ranked Boise State women’s tennis team excelled in their first competition of the 2009 spring season topping Montana State, 6-1 at the Boas Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.


The Broncos started off on the right foot by sweeping the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Pichittra Thongdach was joined by freshman Lauren Megale who made her hometown debut as a Bronco in the No. 1 doubles match. The pair made quick work of Montana State’s Missy Harris and Ali Griffin, winning in an 8-1 decision. In the No. 2 doubles spot, junior Bianca Jochimsen and senior Laura Baum fought from behind to down MSU’s Stephanie Jasper and McKenzie Hilmer, 8-4. In the longest match of the afternoon, Boise State seniors Jana Mackova and Klaudia Wlodarczyk battled Laura Villegas and Andrea De La Torre to an 8-5(5) victory to seal the doubles sweep.


In singles play, freshman Rocio Frej produced an exciting debut as a Bronco by earning the first singles win of the day. Frej defeated De La Torre in a quick 6-2, 6-1 match at No. 6, giving the Broncos a 2-0 team lead. Fellow freshman Megale followed suit, finishing shortly after in a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot over Villegas. Jochimsen also earned a big win at the No. 4 spot, downing Griffin, 6-2, 6-1 for a 4-0 Bronco lead.


The Bobcats’ only win came in the No. 3 spot when Harris was able to hold off Wlodarczyk in a 6-2, 6-1 match.


In the No. 5 singles match, Baum put the Broncos up 5-1 after defeating Hilmer, 6-1, 6-4. Creating the second longest match of the day, No. 104-ranked Thongdach was able to hold off a tough Jasper in the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to give the Broncos a 6-1 team victory.


After clinching their first win of the season, the Broncos will have one day off to prepare for their second match of the season against Penn State. The match will be held at the Boas Tennis Center on Sun., Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. Montana State will continue play in Boise on Sat., Jan. 24 against Penn State in a 10 a.m. match at Boas. Admission is free to all matches.
