Boise State Falls to Denver 6-1
Marlena Pietzuch goes 2-0 in opening weekend.
BOISE, Idaho (1/22/2012) - Boise State University finished the opening weekend with a home split as the Broncos fell 6-1 to the University of Denver in a nonconference women's tennis match Sunday morning at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise. The Pioneers took a hard fought doubles point then claim victories in five of the six singles matches to hand Boise State its first defeat of the young season. Marlena Pietzuch was the only Bronco to record a victory with a straight-set win at the number two singles.
Boise State battled hard in the doubles competition taking two of the matches to tie breakers before falling 3-0. Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch took Denver's number one duo of Sophia Bergner and Steffi Rath to a tie breaker before bowing out 9-8 (8-6). Kaitlyn Brown and Sonia Klamczynska also forced a tie breaker at the threes but eventually lost 9-8 (8-3) to DU's Caroline Schnell and Natalie Dunn.
Morgan Basil and Sandy Vo battled Elena Najera and Emma Isberg at the second position but lost 8-4 as the Pioneers claimed the sweep and match point in doubles.
The singles competition also went the way of Denver as it claimed victories in five of the six matches. The lone Bronco to come out on top was Marlena Pietzuch who remains undefeated in duo competitions at 2-0 with a straight-set (6-0, 6-2) win over Madeleine Saari-Bystrom at the number two singles.
Klamczynska playing at the number one singles fell 6-4, 6-4 to DU's Sophia Bergner in the closest of the other five matches. Boise State's Morgan Basil was on the short end of a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Emma Isberg.
With Friday's victory over Utah State the Broncos are now 1-1 on the year. Boise State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they host a doubleheader against Weber State University and Seattle University at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise.
