Broncos Advance in Singles and Doubles

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Four Broncos remain alive for an ITA Mountain Regional title after the first day of competition Wednesday, in Albuquerque, N.M. In singles, No. 11 seed Hanna Kantenwein, Nancy Menjivar and Milena Toseva advanced to the round of 64. In doubles, Kantenwein and Toseva as well as Menjivar and Lilian Poling are into the round of 32.

Menjivar and Toseva rolled to straight-set wins in singles while Kantenwein earned a bye in the first round by virtue of her seeding. Menjivar defeated Brandi Walker of Northern Arizona 6-2, 6-4. She will take on No. 7 seed Aiwen Zhu out of UNLV in the second round. Toseva picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Northern Colorado’s Beth Coton.

Doubles play saw Poling and Menjivar pick up a tight 8-6 win over the duo of Cassie Chung and Diana Wong from New Mexico. Kantenwein and Toseva, seeded No. 9-16, had a bye in the first round.

Poling was knocked off in singles by Denver’s Arisha Ladhani, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Poling was among the No. 17-32 seeds in the draw. Kirsty Venter challenged seeded Polina Malykh of BYU before falling 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

Action continues Thursday, with one round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles. The tournament runs through Sunday.
