BOISE, Idaho - Morgan Basil led the Boise State women’s tennis team at its own home tournament this weekend winning two titles during the Jack Taylor Classic at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise. The senior teamed up with doubles partner senior Sandy Vo Sunday morning to win the Blue Flight doubles championship, then followed that with the Blue Flight singles title in the afternoon. Overall Boise State reached all four championship matches in the flights Broncos competed in, winning two. The Broncos closed the opening weekend of the fall season with a dominating performance going a combined 34-14 overall in both singles and doubles matches.
“This was an outstanding weekend for our program. With 11 teams and nearly 80 players in the draw from some very good schools, we were very happy to have so many players still standing in their respective draws and reaching title matches on the final day,” said head coach Beck Roghaar. “All of our players competed so well today, and it was great to see players that made the finals of this event for the first time, get some much needed experience in this type of situation. As a team, we’ve been working extremely hard this fall, and this tournament will serve as a very solid foundation for us to keep building from.”
Basil had an outstanding tournament winning two titles and going 9-0 overall, 5-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles. Sunday morning started when she and her doubles partner of two-plus years Sandy Vo took on Precious Gbadamosi and Ashley Mackey from Montana in the Blue Flight title match. The senior duo easily swept away their Grizzly opponents for a quick 8-1 victory and improved their all-time doubles record as a team to 40-15.
Shortly after winning the doubles title, Basil was on the court facing Idaho’s Galina Bykova for the Blue Flight singles championship. It was a hard match but the St. Petersburg, Fla., native persevered defeating the Vandal in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 for the title.
“It was such a special day for Morgan. Seeing her win the top flight in doubles and singles here at home to start her senior year was just awesome, and she is really coming into her game and maturing out there on the court,” said Roghaar. “I’m so proud of how she played and competed. She and Sandy Vo had to overcome a big deficit in their semifinal doubles match against a tough Washington State team to get to the finals today, but they trusted in the game plan and started executing at a really high level. Today they came out firing on all cylinders right away to come away with a solid 8-1 win.”
Sophomore Bobbi Oshiro was the second Bronco to advance to Sunday’s championship round reaching the Orange Flight singles title match against Washington State’s Maria Biryukova. Oshiro found herself down early in the first set but rallied to take a 5-4 lead, before falling in a tie break 7-1. Oshiro finished an impressive weekend falling in the final to WSU’s Biryukova who won the second set 6-3 to claim the championship.
Boise State was also represented in Orange Flight doubles championship match where Anissa Bryant-Swift and Sammie Watson faced Idaho’s Belen Barcenilla and Sophie Vickers. The Bronco duo fought hard but fell 8-3 to the Vandals.
In other contests involving Broncos on Sunday sophomore Megan LaLone lost a consolation singles match to Washington State’s Elizaveta Luzina in a tight two-set contest falling 7-5, 7-6 (6). LaLone also played in a doubles match with Bobbi Oshiro where the duo lost 8-5 to Lize Leenknecht and Luzina of Washington State.
Boise State will be back in action next weekend when the Broncos travel north to take part in the Washington State Cougar Classic at Pullman, Wash., Sept. 27-29.
