Boise State Opens Strong at Jack Taylor Classic

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State opened the Jack Taylor Classic strong Friday going 17-2 overall in singles and doubles combined. The Broncos advanced six singles players and all of their doubles teams into Saturday’s quarterfinals at the Appleton Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park. On the opening day of the fall season the Broncos went 14-2 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in a dominating performance.  Boise State’s senior duo of Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil led the Broncos as they each swept their singles matches then teamed up for a easy 8-1 doubles victory. The tournament continues Saturday morning at all three locations: the Appleton Tennis Center, Julia Davis Park and Timberline High School, the action begins at 8:30 a.m.  

Friday in the Blue Flight at the Appleton Tennis Center the Broncos went 8-2 in singles with Sandy Vo, Morgan Basil and Teal Vosburgh all winning two matches, while Sammie Watson and Megan LaLone each split. Vo, Basil and Vosburgh advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals at the Appleton Tennis beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Vo, one of three seniors on the team, won her first match over Seattle U’s Barbara Carey easily 6-0, 6-3, then had a tight contest against Idaho’s Bety Flores before out lasting the Vandal in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Basil, the second Bronco senior, had a solid day winning two straight-set matches comfortably over Kristi Elmer of Weber State 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 32, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Montana State’s Paulina Lopez.

Sophomore Teal Vosburgh swept through both of her matches winning 6-0, 6-2 over Idaho State’s Madelyn Weltzin and 6-2, 6-2 against Montana’s Laurence Pelchat.

Sammie Watson opened the day defeating Montana State’s Ellie Crum 6-4, 6-1, then fell in the round of 16 to Montana’s Sasha Carter 6-2, 6-1. Megan LaLone also opened with a victory winning 6-1, 6-1 over Seattle U’s Gabriella Weissman, before losing a tight contest to Idaho’s Galina Bykova in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Both will compete in Saturday’s consolation round.

Julia Davis Park hosted the Orange Flight which featured three Broncos in Bobbi Oshiro, Anissa Bryant-Swift and Sara Brown. All three swept their two matches to reach the quarterfinals of the flight on Saturday.

Oshiro was dominating winning both with ease 6-0, 6-0 over Eastern Washington’s Alexis Filliol and 6-3, 6-3 versus Weber State’s Thais Kurer. Bryant-Swift defeated Weber State’s Annika Karlsen 6-1, 6-0, then followed with a harder win over Laura Theus of Idaho State 7-5, 6-4.

Sara Brown had an impressive debut as the only freshman on this year’s roster. The Tucson, Ariz., native opened singles with a three-set victory over Dani Young from Eastern Washington 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. She then had a second three-set win in the round of 16 over Montana State’s Wena Tsan 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Boise State won all four doubles matches advancing each into Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Broncos doubles teams for this tournament are Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil, Bobbi Oshiro and Megan LaLone, Teal Vosburgh and Sara Brown, along with Anissa Bryant-Swift and Sammie Watson.
