LOGAN, Utah - Sammie Watson and Bobbi Oshiro recorded singles victories to lead Boise State in a heartbreaking 4-3 road loss in the regular season finale at Utah State on Saturday in Logan. The Broncos won the doubles point 2-0 and was up 3-2 following Watson's and Oshiro's singles victories, but it was not enough as Utah State rallied winning the final two matches to claim a tightly contested victory over Boise State.
"I am really proud of the way we played and battled today, it was tough the entire time," said coach Beck Roghaar. "We had our chances in a match that went back and forth, but it just did not go our way in the end. We will learn from this as we look to improve heading into next week's conference championship. We have practiced hard all spring and I believe we are prepared and can make a run at the title next week in Albuquerque, which is one of our goals."
The loss gives the Broncos a 9-12 overall mark and a 2-4 record in league play. Next up for the Blue and Orange, Boise State will leave Monday afternoon for the Mountain West Conference Championship at Albuquerque, N.M., which begins on Wednesday.
Boise State clinched the team doubles point over Utah State with dominating 6-2 victories by the teams of Watson and Oshiro, as well as Teal Vosburgh and Milena Toseva. Watson and Oshiro were the first off the court defeating USU's top tandem of Maggie O'Meara and McKenzie Davis to improve to 17-12 overall. Vosburgh and Toseva followed winning on court three over the Aggies Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley as they moved to 13-5 on the year.
The third doubles matched had Boise State's Arianna Paules Aldrey and Megan LaLone leading 4-2 on court two when play was stopped with the clinch.
After Utah State had tied the team score at one all, Oshiro put the Broncos back on top with a quick straight-set victory 6-3, 6-1 on court four over the Aggies' O'Meara. Oshiro finishes the regular season at 21-9 in singles, second-best mark on team.
The match was tight throughout as the Aggies came back to tie the score at 2-2. This time Watson gave Boise State back its one-point advantage at 3-2 when she tallied a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory on court five over Sabrina Demerath. The senior from Denver finishes the regular season with a team-best 24-4 singles mark.
Utah State rallied down the stretch winning the final two singles contests. Of the four matches the Broncos lost in Logan two went to three sets and a third went to two set tiebreakers.
Toseva rallied from one set down to force it to three before falling on court six 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to make the team score 2-2.
The final two sets which went to the Aggies were battles to the end. Paules Aldrey fell on court three on two tiebreakers 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (5) to make the team score 3-3.
The match came down to the final contest on court two where LaLone was facing Guensler. LaLone dropped the opening set, battled back winning the second, then lost in the third as Guensler grabbed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win to claim the team victory for Utah State.
