Boise State Remains Perfect at Home Downs Portland State
March 28, 2013
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State rolled past Portland State by a 7-0 score Thursday night in a women's tennis match at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center in Boise. The Broncos defeated the Vikings by sweeping all seven points for the sixth time in seven home matches this season. Boise State opened the match up one team point when illness sidelined three Portland State players resulting in forfeits at No. 3 doubles and more importantly at No. 6 singles which led to a easy point for the Broncos. The win improves Boise State to 9-5 overall and 6-0 at home.
The Broncos opened the doubles competition needing to win only one of the two matches, because of the Viking forfeit on court three. The clincher came on court one by Manuela and Marlena Pietzuch as the twins downed Portland State's top team of Nayanatara Vadali and Mandy Mallen 8-2.
Boise State's Morgan Basil and Teal Vosburgh completed the doubles sweep with a hard fought 8-7 (5) victory on court two over the Vikings' Marina Todd and Megan Govi. This was the first match this spring where Basil and Sandy Vo did not team-up at No. 2 doubles for the Broncos. Vo was forced to sit out the match due to injury. Fortunately after a slow start Basil and Vosburgh came together down the stretch to pullout the win.
Up two team points heading into the singles portion of the competition, the Broncos had the momentum needing only two wins in singles out of the five matches to be played. Manuela Pietzuch playing in only her second singles match of the winter started things off for Boise State as she rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five moving the Broncos to within one point of victory.
Freshman Teal Vosburgh would give Boise State the needed point to clinch the team victory. With the absence of Vo who normally plays at either court one or two, Vosburgh was forced to move up to No. 2 singles for only the second time this season. The true freshman from Texas responded with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win over PSU's Marina Todd to clinch the match for the Broncos. Vosburgh improved her individual marks to 9-4 this spring and 15-10 on the year.
Morgan Basil was the third Bronco off the court when she downed Portland State's Megan Govi 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to improve to a team-best singles record of 11-2 this spring, 18-6 overall.
The next two singles matches finished within minutes of Basil's victory. Marlena Pietzuch rallied from a slow opening set where she was down 5-4 before turning it on in time to win the frame 7-5. The senior from Germany ended up winning the match 7-5, 6-1 over Mandy Mullen.
The final match to conclude was on court four where Megan LaLone handed the Vikings' Alexa McDonald a 6-1, 6-1 defeat, improving her record in the process to 9-3 this spring 17-7 on the year.
Boise State will be back in action this Saturday morning when the Broncos host the Lewis-Clark State Warriors from Lewiston, Idaho, at 10 a.m. at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center.
