BOISE, Idaho- Boise State swimming and diving Head Coach Kristin Hill announced, Friday, Sydney Johansen of Sacramento, Calif., signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Broncos. Johansen, currently a senior at St. Francis High School, specializes in the backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley.

"Sydney is going to be our fastest incoming 100 backstroker," Hill said. "She will also help us in the breaststroke and the IM."

A three-time high school All-American and owner of two school records at St. Francis, Johansen owns three personal-best times that would be good enough to land on Boise State all-time top-10 lists. One of those marks came when Johansen claimed the 2010 Sac-Joaquin Sectional Championship in the 100-yard backstroke. She is coached by Kirk Johansen at St. Francis.

Johansen is coached by Brian Nabeta as a member of the Arden Hills National Team. She qualified for the 2009 NCSA junior nationals, and is a USA Swimming national qualifier.

"She comes from a very strong club team, coached by Brian Nabeta," said Hill. "It's a team I've watched compete at a very high level for many years. Her father is also one of the club coaches, and his vote of confidence for our program went a long way. She loves giving back to the community and I know she'll enjoy the volunteer opportunities here, both within and outside of the athletic department."

Johansen was a member of the St. Francis honor roll in 2008-09, and is an active participant in community service events, including working with mentally challenged, homeless, elderly and underprivileged youth.

"I chose Boise State because on my recruiting trip I felt like I was already part of the family," Johansen said. "Everyone was so welcoming and accepting to me and all of the other recruits. I really feel like it is a place where I can become a faster swimmer and that I will keep improving throughout my years there. Boise was one of the most fun places I've been and I know I could live there for the next four or more years."
