BOISE, Idaho- Boise State swimming and diving Head Coach Kristin Hill announced, Friday, Heather Harper of Redmond, Wash., signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Broncos. Harper, currently in her senior year of being homeschooled through the Cedar Park Christian School Independent Study Program, competes for Redmond High School, and specializes in the breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley.

"Heather is the fastest recruit in the 100 breaststroke in the history of our program," Hill said. "We are excited to start working with her. She missed Olympic trials by just several hundredths of a second. She will probably get that cut as a Bronco, so we like that."

Harper owns three All-American honors to this point of her high school career, and claims four school records at Redmond. As a sophomore she picked up a state title in the 100-yard breaststroke and guided the Mustangs to a third-place finish at the state meet, the best in school history. Harper is coached at Redmond by Julie Barashkoff and Megan Oesting. She is currently the team captain after being voted Redmond's Most Valuable Player in 2009.

Harper is coming off an appearance at the 2010 USA Swimming Summer Long Course Junior Nationals as a member of PRO Swimming, where she is coached by Justin Berry. She placed 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke at the prestigious meet. She is also a Senior National qualifier in the event. Harper's times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes would each rank in the top 10 at Boise State.

"Heather is from where I grew up," Hill said. "I swam with both of Heather's high school coaches growing up, so I've known about Heather's strengths for quite awhile."

Harper earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors as a sophomore and junior. She spends her time outside of the pool working as a youth leader Vacation Bible School teacher.

"After hearing about Boise State from my high school coaches, I decided to take a closer look," Harper said. "I was immediately impressed with Kristin Hill and the entire coaching staff. They are exceptional and I believe they truly care about each student-athlete. Throughout the college decision process as I compared schools around the country, it became clear to me just how unique the swimming program is at Boise State. Then, on my weekend visit, I fell in love with everything about the school. The campus is beautiful, the team was so welcoming. Boise State's strong academic programs and commitment to its athletes made my decision easy. I'm very excited to be a part of this team for the next four years and beyond!"
