BOISE, Idaho- Boise State swimming and diving Head Coach Kristin Hill announced, Friday, Nikki Cannon of Vancouver, Wash., signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Broncos. Cannon, currently a senior at Hudson's Bay High School, specializes in the freestyle, backstroke and individual medley.
"Nikki really helps us achieve our goal of getting the backstroke races covered," Hill said. "I think she's also going to be really strong in the sprint freestyles. She's from a smaller team, and is really excited to be a part of a bigger group. She's someone who is really thankful for the opportunity to be here, and she has a really big heart."
Cannon is the team captain at Hudson's Bay, and the defending WIAA 3A state champion on the 100-yard backstroke. Her title last season marked the first swimming state championship in school history. Cannon is coached at Hudson's Bay by Dave Soelberg.
Also a member of the Vancouver Swim Club, Cannon is coached by Vicki Gordon. She placed seventh at senior sectionals in the 100-yard backstroke, and qualified for senior nationals in the event.
She owns two personal-best times that would be fast enough to land in the top five all-time at Boise State.
Cannon was a 2009-10 Scholastic All-American, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She spends her time away from the pool mentoring new students and as a communications officer for NHS.
"I chose Boise State because I want to be a part of something bigger than myself," Cannon said. "The team is full of amazing girls, who support each other and want to be the best they can. Coach Hill and coach (Justin) Brosseau made me feel welcomed throughout the recruiting process. As soon as I stepped on campus I felt like it was home!"
