DENVER-Boise State junior Stephanie North was named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week for the week of Oct. 20-26, Tuesday. North earned four overall first-place finishes this past weekend in a double dual meet, Oct. 22-23, against North Texas and New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. She also helped the Broncos to overall victories in a pair of relay races as Boise State ran its dual-meet record to 6-0 on the season. The award is North's fourth-career weekly conference honor.
North opened her weekend with a season-best time Friday, in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the event in 24.01. The Klamath Falls, Ore., native then won the 100-yard freestyle with at time of 52.31. North wrapped up the first day of competition by anchoring the Broncos' 200-yard freestyle relay team. The winning time of 1:37.03 was the eighth-fastest time in school history in the event.
The historic success continued during the meet' s second day. North again anchored a first-place relay team for the Broncos. This time the 200-yard medley relay team used a strong kick from North to post a time of 1:46.54 and land at No. 10 in the school record book. She carried the momentum into the day' s individual events, beginning with the 200-yard freestyle. North clocked a time of 1:55.01 (altitude-adjusted) to win in her season debut of the event. The victory gave her individual wins in three different events for the weekend, but she was not finished. The two-time defending WAC Champion in the 100-yard freestyle won the event for the second time in as many days to cap her weekend.
North's WAC Swimmer of the Week award is the Broncos' second of the season, and 10th in program history. Fellow junior Amber Boucher earned the award for the week of Oct. 6-12, earlier this season.
