Sam Wicks Named MW Swimmer Of The Week
Oct. 14, 2014

BOISE, Idaho - Junior Sam Wicks was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Wicks claimed her first-career weekly conference honor after going 8-for-8 in her events over Boise State's dual-meet victories over Utah and Idaho last week. She claimed six individual wins and two with the 200 medley relay quartet which also featured Heather Harper, Brittany Aoyama and freshman Emma Chard.

Wicks claimed the 200 IM and 100 back at each meet last week, while against Utah last Wednesday she captured the 100 free and took the 50 free at Idaho on Saturday. Her 200 IM victory against the Utes proved vital, as it was the 15th event of the meet (out of 16) and the Broncos trailed by a point heading into the swim. Wicks, who does not often swim the 200 IM, stepped up and delivered a 3.12-second victory to tally nine key points for Boise State, which went on to win the meet, 156.5-143.5.

As part of the 200 medley relay with Harper, Aoyama and Chard, Wicks swam the opening leg, the backstroke, in 25.70, more than a second faster than the next quartet. The Bronco foursome went on to tap the wall in 1:42.46, breaking the Boise West YMCA pool record and notching the eighth-fastest time in Boise State history.

In the 100 back races, Wicks turned in times of 55.87 and 55.46 against Utah and Idaho, respectively, inching closer to the NCAA B standard of 55.09. Her time of 23.54 in the 50 free at Idaho was also just 0.55 of a second off the NCAA B cut in that event.

The defending Mountain West champion Broncos (2-0) return to action on Halloween (Oct. 31), traveling to Corvallis to take on Oregon State.
