Boise State Opens Day Two Strong

    SAN ANTONIO - Boise State put itself into good position Thursday to extend its slim overall lead at the Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships at Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio.

    The Broncos earned eight points from the 3-meter springboard consolation final as sophomores Karli Kriewall and Jordan Marthens finished 11th and 15th overall, respectively. Kriewall scored 271.75 in the six-round consolation while Marthens posted a 217.45.

    Boise State will also be well-represented in Thursday night's finals, both on the springboard and in the swimming lanes for the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The Broncos were able to place a meet-high three swimmers (Felicity Cann, Amelia Draney, Emri Moore) into the 500 free A final with two more in the B final (Emma Chard, Blake Balogh). Two more Broncos, Sam Wicks and Sydney Johansen, reached the A final of the 200 IM with Jessica Bottelberghe making the B final. In the 50 free, Brittany Aoyama and Katelyn Martin secured spots in the A final.

    On the 3-meter springboard, senior Erin Kohlbeck scored a 316.55 in prelims to finish fourth and clinch a top-eight spot into the A final.

    Wicks topped the qualifying field in the 200 IM, clocking a school-record 1:58.44 to eclipse her own previous mark of 1:58.83, set back on Nov. 20, by 0.39 of a second. Johansen clocked the seventh-best time at 2:00.92 while Bottelberghe came just 0.59 of a second shy of the eighth and last A-final spot.

    Cann, who anchored the Broncos' 800 free relay victory Wednesday night, turned in the third-best time of the 500 free prelims, touching the pad in 4:47.93, just six-tenths of a second behind Taylor Padington's school record of 4:47.33 set at last year's conference championships. Draney (4:49.25) was fifth and Moore (4:50.58) sixth while Chard and Balogh finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

    Aoyama (22.96) and Martin (23.13) finished fifth and sixth in 50 free qualifying, while Monica Bottelberghe was 23rd with a time of 23.68.
