Bottelberghe Named MW Swimmer of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Boise State sophomore Jessica Bottelberghe was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week for meets contested Jan. 22-27, the conference announced Wednesday. It is Bottelberghe's first-career weekly honor.

Bottelberghe racked up four individual event wins and two more relay victories during Boise State's weekend trip to Colorado. Bottelberghe won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races Friday, at Denver, in addition to helping the Broncos' 400-yard freestyle relay team to victory. The next day at Colorado State she won the 100 freestyle and added a victory in the 200-yard individual medley. The sophomore also led off the wining 200-yard medley relay team.

Against the Pioneers, Bottelberghe built a steady lead throughout the 200 freestyle and went on to clock a 1:52.16, winning by nearly two seconds. A similar race in the 100 freestyle saw her post a 51.30, nearly a second and a half ahead of anyone else in the field. She closed the meet with the fastest leg in the 400 freestyle relay as Boise State won by more than four seconds.

It is the third time this season Bottelberghe has swept the 100 and 200 freestyle races in the same meet and both marks were the fastest in the Mountain West this week. Her time in the 100 freestyle is the best in the conference since Dec. 15.

Bottelberghe set the tone for Boise State's 171-72 win against conference foe Colorado State, leading off the very first event. The Broncos went on to win the 200 medley relay in 1:43.81, winning by more than three seconds. The Vancouver, Wash., native next hit the water for the 200 individual medley. She clocked the fastest backstroke, butterfly and freestyle legs on her way to winning by more than four seconds in 2:06.02, the fastest time by a Bronco in the event at a dual meet in school history. Later she cruised to victory in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 51.54, more than two seconds ahead of the runner up.

Bottelberghe has won nine of the last 11 individual events she has entered and will carry a six-race win streak into the Mountain West Championships, the Broncos' next competition.

Boise State will look to defend its Mountain West title and seek the program's fourth-consecutive conference championship Feb. 20-23, in San Antonio.

Bottelberghe's award is the third MW Swimmer of the Week honor for the Broncos this season, following Devin Madsen (Nov. 7) and Rachel Heaney (Dec. 5). Boise State's Lexsi Pfeiffer also earned Diver of the Week Dec. 19.
