DeWane Notches Broncos' First Individual Win Against San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. On route to the 18-team UC Irvine Invitational, the Boise State swimming and diving team stopped in San Diego, Calif., to compete in a dual meet with the University of San Diego, Friday.

Boise State diver Jennifer Dorling captured the top score in both one-meter events, posting a 125.35 in the first event and following it up with a 102.60 to collect 18 points for the Broncos.  

“Jennifer was a warrior out there today,” said Head Coach Kristin Hill. “For the first time she took all 11 dives from the one-meter platform and was able to walk away with two first place finishes. I am very proud of the way she competed.”

Nikki DeWane recorded the first individual victory in Boise State history, Friday, when she recorded a time of 1:11.92 in the 100 yard breaststroke. DeWane’s time set a new record for Boise State in the event, eclipsing her previous time of 1:12.59. She also dropped nearly five seconds from her previous time (2:29.34) in the 200 yard individual medley when she recorded a 2:24.92 in the event.

“Nikki (Dewane) has been working very hard,” said Hill. “She was able to drop five seconds from her previous career-best time (in the 200 IM) and it is great to see that all her hard work is paying off.”

The relay team consisting of Holly Chatelain, Meghan Jansen, Emily Fransen and Kelly Knapp won the final event of the day for the Broncos when they posted a 4:31.78 in the 400 yard freestyle.

“This was a great meet for our team,” said Hill. “We learned a lot about ourselves today and I believe this will help springboard us into the UC Irvine Invitational this weekend.”

Other Broncos collecting points include; Kenrda MacLean in the 1000 yard freestyle (12:23.27) and 100 yard backstroke (1:09.19), Kelsey Woodfield in the 100 yard (1:02.30) and 200 yard (2:15.90) freestyle events, Siobhan Gilmartin in the 200 yard freestyle (2:18.65) and 100 yard backstroke (1:13.55), Chatelain in the 500 yard (6:15.50) and 1000 yard (12:42.03) freestyle, Jessica Clark in the 100 yard freestyle (1:08.70), Knapp in the 50 yard freestyle (29.67) and 100 yard butterfly (1:17.80) and DeLeon Guerrero in the 50 yard freestyle (30.15) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:34.88).  

The 200 yard medley relay team featuring Clark, DeLeon Guerrero, Jansen and Fransen also captured two points for Boise State.

The meet ended with Boise State falling to the University of San Diego, 154-68.

The Broncos will travel to Irvine, Calif., Jan. 6-7 to compete in the UC Irvine Invitational starting at 9:00 a.m., Saturday.
