Broncos Begin 2014 Competiton at UCSD

BOISE, Idaho--The Boise State women's swimming and diving team will open the 2014 calendar year with a 16-event dual meet hosted by UC San Diego on Jan. 4., at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif.  Also joining the Broncos will be Grand Canyon and Mountain West foe San Diego State University. The swimmers and divers will begin competition at noon (PT).

About the Broncos: Head coach Kristin Hill enters the 2013-14 season with a strong senior class of five, including 2013 Mountain West champion Rachel Heaney (200-yard butterfly). Heaney also competed at the 2013 NCAA Championships in the 200 butterfly. After opening the season at home against Idaho, Boise State will return Jan. 25 against for its next home meet against Denver at 1 p.m. (MT).

Last Time Out: The Broncos last competed at the Hawkeye Invitational where they took second, finishing behind Notre Dame. Boise State's 400 freestyle relay of Brittany Aoyama, Katelyn Martin, Jessica Bottelberghe and Sam Wicks finished in first with a time of 3:20.35. Senior diver finished third on the three-meter springboard in 321.15. Her marks on all three events earned her Mountain West Diver of the Week for competition from Nov. 25-Dec.9. After the invitational, has the Broncos ranked 14th in the nation.

The Broncos will wrap up their annual holiday training trip with the dual meet against UCSD, SDSU and Grand Canyon.

About the Aztecs: San Diego State is 5-0 this season, coming off a 146-138 dual-meet victory over UCSD on Dec. 30.

History: San Diego State leads the dual meet series 4-0 over the Broncos.

About the Antelopes: Grand Canyon won its first dual meet over Incarnate World 1162.5-1006.5, on Dec. 18. GCU's Hannah Kastigar set a school record at the meet, finishing the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.06.

History: First meeting.

About the Tritons: UCSD has three dual meet victories this season, with their last victory coming over Air Force 177-117.

History: UCSD leads the series 2-1. The Tritons and the Broncos last competed in Jan. 2010 where the Broncos earned their first victory 235.5-134.5.

Races to Watch:

200 Free: Cann holds the top spot in Mountain West rankings with a time of 1:48.42, but San Diego State's Mikaela Macklin ranks second in 1:48.49.

200 Fly: Rachel Heaney leads the Mountain West with a time of 1:58.74 and Grand Canyon's Hannah Kastigar leads the WAC in 1:58.06.

200 Medley Relay: Boise State holds the top spot in the Mountain West Conference with a time of 1:40.53. San Diego State holds the second spot with a time of 1:41.99.
