Boise State Cruises to Win at NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Boise State cruised to a dominating 187-113 victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday in Flagstaff. In a battle between the defending Mountain West Conference champion Broncos and defending Western Athletic Conference champion Lumberjacks, Boise State claimed victories in 11 of 16 events on the day as the blue and orange remained undefeated in dual meets this season at 4-0, stretching their win streak to 10 in duals.

Abbey Sorensen led the Broncos recording four victories overall on the day. She had individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.89) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.77), as well as helping the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to wins. Ally Kleinsorgen followed Sorensen with three victories, while Emma Chard, Cody Evans, Emily Mathis and Robin Pinger all picked up two victories each against the Lumberjacks.

Next up for the Broncos, the diving team will return to Flagstaff, Ariz., next week for a quad-meet before joining the swimmers in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 14-18 where Boise State will attempt to defend its 2017 Mountain West championship.


Highlights

  • Boise State has now won 10-consecutive dual meets, the last loss was at UCLA on Jan. 6, 2017 when the Broncos fell to the Bruins but defeated Kansas head-to-head.

  • The Broncos won 11 of 16 events against the NAU and claimed 11 second-place finishes as well.

  • Boise State claimed the top-two places in six events: 50-yard free, 100-yard free, 200-yard free, 500-yard free, 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard free relay. 

  • The Broncos claimed the top-four places in the 100-yard free. 

  • Two swimmers recorded NCAA “B” standard times in the meet. Ally Kleinsorgen clocked a time of 54.53 in the 100-yard backstroke, while Abbey Sorensen turned in a 22.89 in the 50-yard freestyle.

  • Cassidy Bose tallied a NCAA Zone E qualifying and season-high score of 288.30 points on the 3-meter springboard.


Race/Dive Recaps

  • 200-Yard Medley Relay: Boise State’s A team (Kleinsorgen, Pinger, Jennings, Sorensen) won the event with a 1:42.59, while the B team (Zacest, Williams, Bottelberghe, Hogg) place third with a 1:45.14.

  • 1,000-Yard Freestyle: Emma Chard took second-place with a time of 10:26.68, Mandy Barnes placed third clocking a 10:34.09.

  • 200-Yard Freestyle: Cody Evans won the 200 free tallying a 1:52.89, while Hayley Hill placed second with a 1:53.20. The Broncos had five of the top six finishes in the event overall. 

  • 100-Yard Backstroke: Boise State claimed four of the top-five places in the 100 back led by Ally Kleinsorgen’s winning and NCAA “B” cut time of 54.53. Molly Hogg (57.02) placed third, Georgia Zacest (57.84) was fourth and Lauren Sale (58.76) took fifth.

  • 100-Yard Breaststroke: The Broncos clocked the top-two times and the fourth in the event. Laura Williams (1:04.20) won it followed by Emily Mathis (1:04.43) in second and Robin Pinger (1:06.67) in fourth. 

  • 200-Yard Butterfly: Brittany Wen placed second with a 2:04.32. 

  • 50-Yard Freestyle: Abbey Sorensen claimed her second win on the day with a NCAA “B” cut time of 22.89. Emmie Jennings placed second with a 23.91.

  • 1-Meter Springboard: Cassidy Bose turned in a 258.75 to place second.

  • 100-Yard Freestyle: Boise State swept the top-four places in the 100 free led by Robin Pinger (51.63), followed by Ally Kleinsorgen (51.82), Emmie Jennings (52.29) and Monica Bottelberghe (52.33), respectively.

  • 200-Yard Backstroke: Abbey Sorensen’s third victory was in the 200 fly turning a time of 2:00.77. Molly Hogg (2:06.06) was third followed by Madison Frederick (2:06.66) in fourth and Lauren Sale (2:07.63) in fifth. 

  • 200-Yard Breaststroke: Emily Mathis brought home the 200 breaststroke with a 2:18.04.

  • 500-Yard Freestyle: Emma Chard led a 1-2 sweep in the 500 free recording a 5:00.54, while Hayley Hill (5:00.61) was close behind. 

  • 100-Yard Butterfly: Emmie Jennings placed second in the 100 fly with a 56.22, Brittany Wen (57.43) came in third, Monica Bottelberghe (58.57) placed fourth.

  • 3-Meter Springboard: Cassidy Bose recorded a season-high and NCAA qualifying score of 288.30 to place second, Taylor Clark placed fourth with a 253.05.

  • 200-Yard Individual Medley: Emily Mathis completed her day with her second win on a time of 2:07.73 in the 200 IM, Robin Pinger (2:10.18) was third, Emma Chard (2:12.27) fourth and Lauren Sale (2:14.00) fifth.

  • 400-Yard Freestyle Relay: Boise State turned in a big day in the 400 free relay as they swept the top-two places. Today the A team (Kleinsorgen, Sorensen, Evans, Chard) won the race with a 3:27.29 followed by the B team’s (Bottelberghe, Zacest, Jennings, Frederick) 3:30.57.
