BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State women’s sand volleyball team hosted a middle school competition camp Thursday afternoon at the new sand volleyball courts on the corner of Beacon Street and Lincoln Avenue. The competition camp is the first of a series of camps that are focused on helping middle school and high school-aged youth learn and develop skills for sand volleyball.

The camps are designed to teach the fundamentals of sand volleyball and test those skills in competitive doubles tournaments. The middle school competition camps are scheduled for June 12, 19 and 26, and the high school camps are scheduled for June 6, 13, 20 and 27.

“I am really excited for the sand volleyball side of things to get started this summer,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “Boise State built this beautiful, new three-court facility on campus and we are able to access it a couple days a week and get some kids out here, introduce them to the game and hopefully get them playing the sport year round.”

The competition camps were preceded by clinics that were held in May. The clinics focused on more of the techniques and skills in sand volleyball, ideally prepping clinic attendees for the competition camps that will be taking place the whole month of June.

“It grew really fast,” said assistant coach Breann Crowell.  “We had about 25 kids for our first clinic, and the second clinic we had a week ago we had 40 kids.”

The whole sand volleyball staff is hoping for a steady increase in attendance in the competition camps as the month of June continues.

Kids who are interested in the camps can register online here. Registration deadline is the Wednesday prior to each competition date, but if the camp is not at capacity, they will accept walk-ups.

The cost is $10 per person, per tournament date; however registration will be incomplete without a playing partner fully registered.

The camps last from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (MT), and the scheduled check-in time is 8:30 a.m. You must register with your playing partner.
