Broncos Close Inaugural Season in Arizona

What’s Happening

  • Boise State’s sand volleyball program will close its inaugural campaign this weekend when the Broncos travel south to Arizona for four matches. 
  • The Broncos are taking their 4-3 record into the weekend which begins Friday in Phoenix where they will face the Grand Canyon Antelopes (7-5) at 11 a.m. (Mountain), then travel to Tempe for a 5 p.m. match against the Arizona State Sun Devils (4-5).
  • The season will close on Saturday when Boise State travels further south to Tucson where they will face the top-ranked Southern California Women of Troy (20-1) at 12 p.m., followed by the season finale against its host the Arizona Wildcats (7-10) at 2 p.m.
  • Boise State, Arizona and Arizona State are all first-year sand volleyball programs, USC is in its third season, while Grand Canyon is in its second.
  • This weekend the Broncos will be facing one of the six teams chosen this Wednesday to play in next week’s AVCA 2014 Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships in No. 1 Southern Cal. 
  • In addition, Boise State will face three of the 16 pairs chosen for the AVCA Pairs Championship next week in USC’s top two teams of Mary Buckingham/Alexa Stonish (17-3) and Kelly Claes/AlexaStrange (18-2), as well as Grand Canyon’s team of Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallman (17-4).

Last Time Out

  • Boise State last played on Saturday, April 12, in Portland, Ore., where the Broncos swept three matches: Portland State (exhibition) 2-1, Oregon 3-2 and Washington 3-2. 
  • The pair of Maddy O’Donnell and Aly Duffin went undefeated at 2-0 playing at the No. 5 position. The other four pairs during the Oregon and Washington matches each split. 
  • Against the Ducks, Boise State won at No. 1 Gammel/Reardon, No. 2 Horton/Baugh and No. 5 O’Donnell/Duffin.
  • Versus Washington the Broncos recorded wins at No. 3 Rose/Oliver, No. 4 Murphey/Kinghorn and No. 5 O’Donnell/Duffin. 

The Broncos

  • Record: After two weeks of play Boise State took last weekend off. They enter this week’s final matches in Arizona with a 4-3 record. 
  • Recently: The last time out Boise State swept three matches in Portland, Ore., where they defeated Portland State 2-1 in an exhibition, followed by a pair of 3-2 victories over Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington. 
  • Road Warriors: Boise State is playing its entire inaugural season of 11 matches on the road this year, all in the month of April.
  • History Makers: The freshmen duo of Izzy Miller and Maddy O’Donnell became the first Boise State tandem to win a match in history. The duo won 21-14, 33-31 in the inaugural match on April 4 against then-9th-ranked Saint Mary’s No. 5 pair of Maegan Conroy and Milena Popovic. 
  • Roster Experience: About half of the roster has experience playing competitive sand volleyball in high school. Most notable are Hannah Hubbard, Aly Duffin, Sarah Baugh, Sarah Horton and Alyssa Gammel who all played in high school. 
  • Mixing It Up: Boise State has used 10 different pairs combinations to date with only one seeing time in all seven matches, that tandem being juniors Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon who are 1-6 while playing exclusively at No. 1.

  • Bronco Individual Leaders: Entering the final weekend of the season Aly Duffin has recorded the top individual mark of 5-1 playing at No. 4 and 5. Katelyn Kinghorn has gone 4-2 also at No. 4 and 5. Maddy O’Donnell is 3-1 on court 5, while Sarah Horton is 3-4 overall, but is 3-3 at No. 2. Casey Rose and Taylor Murphey are each 3-3 playing No. 3-5.
