WHAT IS HAPPENING

  • Boise State’s beach volleyball team will host an exhibition pairs tournament featuring two-person teams from Boise State University, the College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Southern Idaho.
  • There will not be any head-to-head school competition, it is strictly a pairs event.
  • The tournament will consist of one bracket featuring all (25) of the pairs, as well as a consolation bracket.
  • The tournament will be held at the Boise State Sand Volleyball Complex on the corner of Belmont Street and S. Oakland Avenue from 1:45 to approximately 8 p.m. (MT).
“I really wanted to host a beach tournament featuring the local schools as a way to help promote the sport in the Treasure Valley,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “We hosted them in a team tournament last spring and it was a great experience. We wanted to do something similar this year and decided to do it as a pairs tournament instead of a head-to-head competition. It will be a fun event and I hope to see people come out and support all four teams.”

WHAT IS NEXT

  • Boise State will close out the season with two matches this weekend against the University of Washington in Seattle.
  • Note: Saturday’s start time has been moved up to 12 p.m. (Mountain), so both matches will now start at 12 p.m. (Mountain) but will be played at different locations.
  • On Saturday the match will be played at the Husky Beach Courts on campus off of Mountlake Avenue, adjacent to the north side of the IMA building (Intramural Activities Building) and just to the west of Husky Ballpark.
  • On Sunday the match will be played at Alki Beach in west Seattle (1702 Alki Ave SW, Seattle, WA).

ABOUT THE BRONCOS

  • Boise State is in its fourth season of beach volleyball and competes as an independent in the sport.
  • The Broncos have played nine matches this season going 5-4 overall.
  • Boise State traveled to Stanford, Calif., last weekend where they went 1-2 against three Pac-12 opponents. The Broncos opened with a 4-1 victory over Oregon on Friday, then fell 3-2 to Cal and 4-1 to 20th-ranked Stanford on Saturday.
  • The Broncos’ top three pairs went 2-1 on the weekend with Maddy O’Donnell and Maddi Osburn, as well as Janell Walley and Emily Sullivan tallying wins against Cal and Oregon playing No. 1 and 2 pairs, respectively; while Sierra Nobley and Sabryn Roberts earned victories versus Oregon and Stanford.

THE BRONCO LINEUP

  • No. 1 Pair: Boise State is led by Maddy O’Donnell and Maddi Osburn who have gone 6-3 at the top position.
  • No. 2 Pair: Emily Sullivan and Janell Walley moved into the second pair position after the season opener where they are 6-2 ... they are 7-2 overall on the year.

  • No. 5 Pair: The freshmen tandem of Jensen Allen and Cassedi Simon have competed in all nine matches to date at No. 5 pair going 2-7 overall.

ABOUT THE FIELD

  • All three of the visiting schools the College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Southern Idaho do not officially sponsor the sport of beach volleyball so this will be their first event of the year in the sand.
  • Rosters for all three are composed of their indoor team’s members.
  • All three are using this exhibition tournament as a way to expose their squads to the sport.
  • Boise State hosted all three in a team tournament format last spring.
