WHAT'S HAPPENING
  • Boise State (3-8) continues its three-week string of road trips to open the season.
  • This week has the Broncos traveling to Hermosa Beach, Calif., where they will play in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge.
  • The competition features team duals Saturday morning and afternoon, followed by a pairs tournament that starts on Saturday after the duals and runs all day on Sunday.
  • The field for this weekend includes 10 teams, four that are nationally ranked by the AVCA: No. 1 Southern California, No. 2 Hawai'i, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 6 Long Beach State, Boise State, Concordia Irvine, Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara and San Francisco.

Team Duals
  • During the team duals portion of the competition Boise State will face No. 1 USC (17-0) at 1 p.m. (Mountain) and No. 2 Hawai'i (10-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The match with the Women of Troy will be the second in the series with USC defeating the Broncos 5-0 last year in Tucson, Ariz.
  • The encounter with Hawai'i will be a first time meeting between the two programs.

Pairs Tournament
  • This will be the first pairs tournament the Broncos have participated in since starting up for the 2014 season.
  • In pairs tournaments or "flighted tournaments" the two-member pairs compete separately and not as a team. Each of Boise State's pairs will be assigned to one of the three flights - in this case the gold, silver or bronze flights - to compete.
  • This pairs competition is single elimination.

RECENTLY FOR BOISE STATE
  • Boise State had a solid week (April 3-5) on the road in Sacramento, Calif., going 3-3.
  • The Broncos opened strong Friday with wins over San Francisco (W 3-2) and San Jose State (W 4-1).
  • Boise State then started Saturday's doubleheader with a 3-2 upset of California followed by a 3-2 loss to Cal Poly.
  • On Sunday the Broncos struggled a bit falling 4-1 to Pacific before dropping a heartbreaker to Sacramento State where four of the five matches went to three sets in a 3-2 defeat.
  • The No. 2 pair of Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley had a great weekend going 5-1 in Sacramento and are now a team-best 6-5 on the season.

THE BRONCOS
  • Program History: This is the second season in the history of the Bronco sand volleyball program after going 4-7 during last year's inaugural campaign.
  • Record: Boise State is currently 3-8 on the year.
  • Road Warriors: Boise State is playing the first three weeks of the 2015 season on the road for a total of 13 matches.
  • Home Debut: Boise State played all 11 matches on the road last year. The Broncos will play their first home matches in program history on Friday, April 24, when they host No. 10 Arizona and Oregon in a round-robin at the Boise State University Sand Volleyball Courts on the corner of Belmont and Oakland.

THE ROSTER
  • The Roster: This spring there are 12 players on the squad, all coming from the indoor team at Boise State.
  • Roster Experience: The Broncos return eight players from last year's squad for the 2015 campaign. Of the eight, only seven played for Boise State in a competitive match: Aly Duffin (Jr.), Sarah Baugh (So.), Kaitlyn Oliver (So.), Katelyn Kinghorn (Jr.), Laney Hayes (So.), Taylor Murphey (Jr.) and Maddy O'Donnell (So.). Hannah Hubbard (R-Fr.), the most experienced player out of high school, was injured and redshirted last season.
  • Newcomers: The Broncos added four players to this year's roster in freshmen Erienne Barry (St. Charles, Ill.), Jaymee-Lee Bulda (Sacramento, Calif.), Sierra Nobley (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Maddi Osburn (Nampa, Idaho).
  • 2015 Leaders: The tandem of Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley are leading the team with a 6-5 overall record playing on court two ... the next team is the pair of Laney Hayes and Taylor Murphey who are 5-6 on the year splitting time between courts four and five.

SAND VOLLEYBALL FORMAT
  • Sand volleyball is different than the indoor game which plays with a six-women team on the court.
  • In the sand they play with five two-women pairs which are ranked according to ability with the No. 1 pair being the best, much like collegiate tennis.
  • The winner of the match is the team who wins three or more of the pairs.
  • Each individual match played by the pairs is two out of three sets to win. The first two sets go to 21 points with the third, if needed, going to 15 points, all are win by two.

ADDITION OF SAND VOLLEYBALL
  • Boise State University Executive Director of Athletics Mark Coyle announced on Aug. 29, 2013 the addition of women's sand volleyball to the list of sports sponsored by the Broncos.
  • The addition of sand volleyball gave Boise State 20 intercollegiate teams.
  • Boise State was the first school to add sand volleyball in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain regions, as well as the Mountain West Conference.
  • This year there are three Mountain West schools that are now sponsoring sand volleyball. Boise State and San Jose State added it for 2014, while New Mexico added it for 2015.

NCAA ADDS SAND VOLLEYBALL AS 90th SPORT
  • The NCAA announced this winter that sand volleyball will officially become the 90th sports sponsored by the organization starting in the spring of 2016. This takes the sport off the "emerging sport list" and makes it an official sport with a NCAA sponsored nationally championship tournament.
  • There are currently 43 NCAA Division I schools sponsoring the sport in 2015 with three more that have announced they will add it for 2016.

COACHING STAFF
  • The NCAA limits the number of coaches to two, a head coach and one assistant.
  • Shawn Garus will serve as the head coach of both the indoor and sand teams.
  • Boise State alumnae Breann Crowell will serve as the sand volleyball assistant coach.
  • Candy Murphy will be the director of operations for the sand team. Murphy is the top assistant for the indoor team.

NEW HOME FOR BRONCO SAND VOLLEYBALL
  • The University opened a new sand volleyball complex called the "Boise State University Sand Volleyball Courts" last summer on the corner of Belmont Street and N. Oakland Avenue. The new complex consist of three regulation courts.
  • This facility is not apart of the athletic department but is owned and controlled by the university.
  • This facility will also serve as the official home of the Boise State sand volleyball program and will host all home matches for the team.
