Boise State Drops a Pair in Arizona

PHOENIX/TEMPE, Ariz.- Boise State sand volleyball dropped a pait of matches in Arizona, Friday. The Broncos fell 3-2 against Grand Canyon in Phoenix in the morning, before traveling across the metropolitan area to Tempe, where they lost 5-0 against Arizona State.

Grand Canyon Match Recap
Boise State fell 3-2 at Grand Canyon Friday morning in Phoenix. It was the first of four matches this weekend in the state of Arizona. Leading the Blue and Orange against the Antelopes were Izzy Miller and Taylor Murphey who won at No. 5 pairs, as well as Casey Rose and Katelyn Kinghorn who won on court three. The loss dropped the Broncos to 4-4 on the season with an afternoon match at Arizona State on the slate.


The day opened with the No. 4 and 5 pairs starting, along with an exhibition match. Both matches at fours and fives went to three sets with the Boise State pairs rallying after losing the first set to win the second and force a decisive third.

The first match completed was the exhibition contest featuring freshmen Kaitlyn Oliver and Laney Hayes. The duo played well but fell in straight sets 21-19, 21-15.

The second pair done were the fives where Miller and Murphey came back from one set down to win in three sets 14-21, 21-9, 15-12. After starting slow the Bronco tandem regrouped and controlled the final two sets.

The third match to finish was No. 4 pairs where Grand Canyon pulled even in the team score at 1-1 with a three-set victory. Boise State’s Aly Duffin and Maddy O’Donnell lost a heartbreaker after rallying from a first set loss. The duo took the Antelopes to the wire before falling 21-10, 17-21, 20-18.

The next session featuring the No. 1, 2 and 3 pairs started off with Grand Canyon seizing control of the team match claiming wins on courts 1 and 2. It started with Boise State’s Sarah Baugh and Sarah Horton taking on the top team from GCU of Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallman, falling 21-12 and 21-10. The Antelope pair are one of 16 pairs that will be competing in next week’s national tournament.

The fifth match finished was the No. 2 pairs where Grand Canyon won 21-5, 21-12 over Boise State’s Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon to clinch the team victory up 3-1.

The Final match went to Boise State at No. 3 pairs where the Bronco tandem of Casey Rose and Katelyn Kinghorn rallied from one set down to defeat GCU’s Chloe Jenkins and Britta Forsythe 19-21, 21-9, 15-12.

Arizona State Match Recap
On a breezy afternoon in Tempe, Ariz., Boise State went down 5-0 to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Boise State’s top pair in the match was at No. 4 where Casey Rose and Katelyn Kinghorn rallied from one set down to force a third set before falling in three. The loss drops the Broncos to 4-5 on the year. 

The match opened with the four and five pairs playing first. The Broncos’ No. 5 pair of Izzy Miller and Taylor Murphey fell in straight sets to ASU’s Andi Lowrance and Nora Trioti-Mariner 23-21, 21-16. 

The fours went to three sets rallying from one set down to force the third and decisive frame. Casey Rose and Katelyn Kinghorn came back after falling by four in the first set to push the Sun Devils’ Genevieve Perot and Bree Baily into an extra set before going down 21-17, 11-21, 15-10 as Arizona State went up 2-0 in the team score. 

The third match to play was at No. 1 where Sarah Baugh and Sarah Horton took on the Devils’ top pair of Bianca   Arellano and Bethany Jorgenson. Unfortunately, Boise State went down 21-5, 21-17 as the Sun Devils clinched the team victory up 3-0.

At the threes Boise State fell in two sets as Aly Duffin and Maddy O’Donnell went down 21-11, 21-12 to the Sun Devils’ pair to make it 4-0 ASU. That was followed by Casey Rose’s and Brittany Reardon’s loss on court two to Macey Gardner and Whitney Follete 21-17, 21-18.

Boise State will close its inaugural season on Saturday at Tucson, Ariz., where the Broncos will play Arizona and No. 1 Southern Cal.
