FOLSOM, Calif. - Boise State wrapped up a long road trip Saturday with a pair of close losses falling 3-2 to both Pacific and Cal Poly at the Sacramento State Tournament in Folsom, Calif.  Boise State battled hard in both matches which could have gone either way and came down to a pair of three-set matches at No. 1 and 2 pairs in each contest with the Broncos coming up on the short end each time.

“I think we may of had some tired legs out there today, it has been a long road trip,” said coach Shawn Garus. “I am pleased with how we have improved this season overall as a team and at every position. Today we played in two really good and competitive matches, we just couldn’t get over the hump. I thought everyone played their hearts out and did us proud. It will be nice to make it back to Boise and sleep in our own beds after nine days on the road. Then we will turn our focus to a really fun weekend next Saturday when we get to play at home for the first time and close our season in front of our fans.”

On the day, Boise State was led in both matches by its No. 5 pair of Laney Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda who won both of their contests Saturday to finish the year 8-3 overall to tie with Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn who also finished 8-3 after splitting on Saturday. The two pairs tied the school record for wins in a season and along with Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley (6-5) at No. 2 pair became the first Bronco teams, who played the entire campaign together, to finish the season with winning records in the program’s three-year history.

The blue and orange concluded the regular season with a 5-6 overall mark setting the Boise State record for wins in a season, surpassing the four won in both 2014 (4-7) and 2015 (4-11).

The Broncos will finish 2016 off by hosting an All Idaho Exhibition Tournament next Saturday featuring the College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene and Southern Idaho. The one day event will start at noon at the Boise State University Sand Volleyball Courts on the corner of Oakland Avenue and Belmont Street.

Pacific Edges Boise State to Open Saturday
Boise State opened the day strong winning two of the first three matches during round one to take a 2-1 match advantage into the final round with the Tigers. Oliver and Osburn recorded their eighth win of the season with a straight set victory over UOP’s Mia Feiner and Jess Hess 21-14, 21-16.

Bulda and Hayes also won during the first round with Pacific as they dispatched the Tigers’ Jessica Diederich and Alex Holt in three sets 21-7, 23-25, 15-8.

The Broncos’ freshmen tandem of Katie Hall and Sabryn Roberts lost only after forcing Pacific’s Maycie LaBass and Katrin Gotterba into extra points during set two before falling 21-15 and 27-25.

That left the second round featuring No. 1 and 2 pairs, as well as an exhibition match. Both contests on courts one and two went three sets and, unfortunately, both went to Pacific for the team victory. Maddy O’Donnell and Hannah Hubbard fell at No. 1 pair after rallying from one set down to force a decisive third before the Tigers pulled it out 21-15, 15-21, 17-15.

Baugh and Nobley played at No. 2 pair where they also rallied after dropping the opening set and pushed the contest into a third. But in the end they could not get past Pacific’s Kimmy Whitson and Ali Wilk as the fell 21-18, 18-21, 15-13.

Sabryn Roberts and Emily Sullivan played an exhibition match defeating Pacific’s Lauren Cline and Janie Feldsher 21-17, 21-7.

Both victories were in two sets beginning with Hall and Roberts at the fours who downed Casey Carroll and Jacqui Martin (CP) 21-16, 21-19. O’Donnell and Osburn fought to the end before falling by the bare minimum possible a total of four points. They won set one 24-22 before falling in the final two frames 21-19, 15-13 to Taylor Nelson and Andie Van Winden. The Bronco tandem who had the grueling task of taking on each teams’ top pair this season finished 2016 at 3-8.

Baugh and Nobley also battled to three sets against Cal Poly but came up short down the stretch. They won the first set then fell victim to Savannah Nieman and Anna Gorman’s rally 15-21, 21-19, 15-10.
