FOLSOM, Calif. - Boise State opened the Sacramento State Tournament with an impressive 4-1 victory over its host the Sacramento State Hornets Friday afternoon at Folsom, Calif. Boise State earned victories at No. 2 through 5 pairs to claim the victory and improve to 5-4 overall.

A split tomorrow against Pacific and Cal Poly on the final day of the tournament would give the Broncos their first winning season in the program’s three years.

“We came out strong today versus Sac State,” coach Shawn Garus said. “After a long travel day yesterday it was crucial we got off to a good start and we did. Laney (Hayes) and Jaymee (Bulda) played solid defense to get the win at five. I thought Sabryn (Roberts) and Katie (Hall) were impressive physically with great blocks and smart hitting to sweep the fours, it was great to see them get another win. As usual we had solid play from our top half pairs. It was a great win all around for us today.”

The match opened with the Broncos sweeping the first three contests pairs three-five. Layne Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda grabbed their sixth win of the season by putting away Sacramento State’s No. 5 pair of Kennedy Kurtz and Bridgette Murdock in straight sets 21-15, 21-16. The Bronco tandem is now 6-3 on the season.

The freshmen duo of Katie Hall and Sabryn Roberts notched their second win of the season with a solid 21-18, 21-12 victory at No. 4 pair versus Hannah Meadows and Brie Gathright.

The opening round was complete following Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn’s two-set win at No. 3 pair 21-12, 21-15 against Lexie Skalbeck and Lana Brown. The win improved their team-leading mark to 7-2 on the season.

The final round feature No. 1 and 2 pairs. Sacramento State earned their lone win of the day at No. 1 pair where the Broncos’ Maddy O’Donnell and Hannah Hubbard battled hard but came up short in two sets 23-21, 21-19.

The final match went to the blue and orange at No. 2 pair where Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley went three sets to collect their sixth victory of the season as they improved to 6-3 overall. They dispatched the Hornets’ tandem of Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley 17-21, 21-19, 15-10.

On the year, three Boise State pairs have clinched winning seasons, the first in program history. They are Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley at 6-3, Laney Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda also at 6-3, as well as Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn at 7-2.
