April 14, 2018

MONOA, Hawaii - Boise State’s beach volleyball team split on Saturday upsetting the Arizona State Sun Devils 3-2, then falling 5-0 to third-ranked Hawai’i. With the Broncos trailing 2-1 against ASU, Boise State rallied behind wins from Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley followed by a dramatic three-set win by Brindl Langley and Kiley Lewis to clinch the team victory.

Hawai’i’s experience proved too much for the Broncos in the second match of the day as the Rainbow Wahine swept past the blue and orange 5-0. The split moved Boise State to 2-8 overall on the year. Boise State will conclude its trip to the islands on Sunday with a pair of contests against ASU and Hawai’i.

“I am really proud of the way the team played today battling to very good teams,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “I thought the win by Jaymee-Lee (Bulda) and Jensen (Allen) was big for us with Jaymee battling through a bug to get the win. Also, I thought that Brindl (Langley) and Kiley (Lewis) played outstanding today. They lost a three-set match at Sac State on Wednesday, then came out today and pulled out a three-set win against ASU to clinch the win. They (Langley and Lewis) then took a set off one of the top teams nationally against Hawai’i. Overall it was a good day for the Broncos.”

The Broncos opened the day by upsetting the Arizona State Sun Devils 3-2 when Langley and Lewis brought the victory home with a three-set win 21-16, 11-21, 15-10 at No. 2 pair over ASU’s Frances Giedraitis and Sydney Palmer. The Bronco duo won the first set then after the Sun Devils had tied it up, Langley and Lewis jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set and never looked back.

It is the first victory over Arizona State in four tries all-time for the Broncos.
