April 12, 2015

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. (4/12/2015) - Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley split a pair of matches Sunday to lead Boise State in the USAV Collegiate Challenge Pairs Tournament this weekend. Boise State saw four pairs play a total of five matches on Sunday going 1-4 as the Broncos finished the competition at 2-5 overall.

"I thought we played hard this weekend against some of the top teams and pairs in the country," said head coach Shawn Garus. "We saw what it takes to be nationally ranked at the top. We also learned alot from playing in our first pairs tournament as a program. There are a lot of positives that we can take from this weekend as we prepare for our first home matches in a couple of weeks. This was a great environment and experience for the team to play in this event on the beach here at Hermosa Beach."

Baugh and Nobley won their opening match of the day defeating San Francisco's Sara Staengle and Jessica Gaffney in a tightly contested three sets. The Bronco tandem won the first set 22-20 then dropped the second 19-21. They regrouped to take a 15-10 win in set three to claim the victory.

Baugh and Nobley advanced into the third round/quarterfinals of the Silver Bracket where they fell to Southern California's Alexa Strange and Sophie Bukovec in two sets 21-13, 22-20.

Three other Bronco pairs competed on Sunday. The freshmen duo of Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Maddi Osburn advanced to today's second round following a win in Saturday's first round. They fell this morning to USC's Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler 21-11, 21-17.

Boise State's Hannah Hubbard and Maddy O'Donnell were the lone pair to compete in the Gold (top) Bracket where they met Cal State Northridge's Kelcie Randazzo and Casey Hinger in two sets 21-12 and 21-16.

Laney Hayes and Taylor Murphey also competed Sunday participating in the Bronze Bracket. The duo rallied from one set down to force a third before falling in a hard fought three sets to San Francisco's Emily Reed and Katarina Pilepic 21-17, 12-21, 15-12.

Boise State will take this coming week off from competition before closing the season at home with the Broncos' first-ever home matches on Friday, April 24, when Arizona and Oregon come to town.
