Saint Mary's Box Score | Stanford Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Boise State’s beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Stanford Tournament falling 3-2 to Saint Mary’s before regrouping to defeat Stanford 3-2 for the second time in seven days. Laney Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda led the Broncos recording two victories at No. 5 pair to remain undefeated at 5-0 on the season. Maddy O’Donnell and Hannah Hubbard rallied from one set down to clinch Boise State’s win over Stanford in three sets. The split gave Boise State a 4-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark versus schools from the Pac-12, they will face both Arizona State and Cal on Sunday at Stanford.

“We had a really challenging day,” coach Shawn Garus said. “Both matches were close and could have gone either way. It was nice to see Sabryn (Roberts) and Katie (Hall) get their first win. It was also good to see Jaymee (Bulda) and Laney (Hayes) stayed undefeated, while Hannah (Hubbard) and Maddy (O’Donnell) picked up a nice win at number one pair to clinch the match versus Stanford for us. I’m looking forward to some more close matches tomorrow when we take on Arizona State and Cal.”

In the loss to Saint Mary’s the Broncos recorded victories from Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn at No. 3 pair as they beat the Gaels’ duo of Alexis Salmons and Madi Wilkerson in three sets 21-11, 14-21, 15-9. The Broncos tandem moved up one spot from No. 4 pair last week but remained perfect at 4-0 overall heading into the Stanford match later.

Hayes and Bulda also won versus Saint Mary’s dispatching the Gaels’ No. 5 pair of Hannah Liserra and Hallie Sullivan 21-12, 21-17. The Broncos duo moved to 4-0 overall on the year.

Also during the first round of the match the freshmen tandem of Katie Hall and Sabryn Roberts lost in a tightly contested two-set affair 21-19, 21-19 at No. 4 pair.

The match was tight throughout between Boise State and Saint Mary’s and could have gone either way. Leading 2-1 after the first round, it came down to the top two pairs to decide the outcome. Both went to three sets and unfortunately for the blue and orange the Broncos came up on the short end. O’Donnell and Hubbard fell in a barn burner at No. 1 pair 20-22, 21-18, 15-11, while Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley suffered their first loss of the season at No. 2 pair 21-16, 15-21, 15-10 to move to 3-1 on the year.

Boise State recovered from the opening loss to Saint Mary’s by defeating Stanford 3-2 for the second time in a week. The two met last Sunday (April 3) in Portland, Ore., where the Broncos also won 3-2.

This time around Boise State’s victory was clinched at No. 1 pair where O’Donnell and Hubbard rallied from a set down to win in three 18-21, 21-16, 15-10 over Hayley Hodson and Payton Chang. The Bronco tandem revenged their loss from the first encounter in Portland to move to 3-2 overall.

The match opened with the Broncos collecting two wins in the first three contests 3-5 pairs in round one. The freshmen tandem of Hall and Roberts moved down one spot on Saturday from last week and earned their first victory of the season. They put away Stanford’s team of Courtney Bowen and Jennifer DiSanto in straight sets 21-16, 25-23.

Hayes and Bulda brought in their fifth-consecutive victory of the season on court five to remain as the only undefeated pair for Boise State. The Bronco duo dominated the Cardinal team of  Karina Robinson and Tami Alade in two sets 21-14, 21-15. It was the second victory of the season for Hayes and Bulda over the Standford duo, however it took three sets last weekend.
