BOISE, Idaho  - Boise State beach volleyball split a pair of home matches Friday afternoon in Boise falling 3-2 to Sacramento State before regrouping to down Oregon 3-2. Boise State was led by Sierra Nobley and Sabryn Roberts who won both of their matches at the number three position. Earning splits on the day were Maddy O’Donnell and Maddi Osburn at No. 1 pair, Janell Walley and Emily Sullivan at No. 2 pair, as well as the tandem of Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Laney Hayes on court four. The split moves the Broncos to 4-2 overall with a road trip to the Stanford Tournament on the slate for next weekend.

“I was pleased overall with how the team performed today,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “It has been a while (four weeks) since we played competitively on the sand and it took us a while to shake the rust off. But once we did, I thought we settled in played well. We have some work to do before we head to Stanford next week but overall it was a good day for Bronco volleyball.”

In the match against Sacramento State the Broncos and Hornets battled hard with Boise State taking a 2-1 lead early on. Bulda and Hayes rallied from one set down at No. 4 pair to defeat the Hornets’ Skyler Takeda and Lana Brown 12-21, 21-11, 15-11. That made the team score 1-1.

Nobley and Roberts put the Broncos on top 2-1 when they swept Kennedy Kurtz and Sarah Davis 21-14, 21-11 on court three.

That left it up to the final two matches, unfortunately both went against the Broncos as the Hornets rallied for the win. Walley and Sullivan fell in a tightly contested match 22-20, 19-21, 16-14 at no. 2 pair, their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, O’Donnell and Osburn went down 22-20, 21-18 on court one.

In the final match of the day Boise State bounced back to take a 3-2 decision from Oregon. The Ducks took the early momentum winning the No. 4 and 5 pairs to go up 2-0 in the team score.

Boise State rallied claiming the final three matches for the victory. It started with No. 3 pair where Nobley and Roberts dispatched Oregon’s Willow Johnson and Maddy Silberger-Franek in two sets 21-14, 21-17. The Boise State tandem is now 5-1 on the year.

Walley and Sullivan tied the match when they put away Taylor Agost and August Raskie at No. 2 pair in straight sets 21-17, 21-12. The Bronco duo improved to 5-1 on the year as well.

That setup the decisive match at No. 1 pair with the winner clinching the team victory. O’Donnell and Osburn battled hard after dropping the first set 21-17 as they rallied to take the second by the same score and force a third set. The final frame was close throughout with the Boise State duo taking a small lead only to have Oregon’s tandem of Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle rally to tie it up. In the end it went to O’Donnell and Osburn who clinched the victory for the Broncos 17-21, 21-17, 15-13. They are now 4-2 on the year after Friday’s two matches.

All three teams split on the day going 1-1 as Oregon defeated Sacramento State 3-2 in the first contest of the day.
