Boise State Closes Weekend with Pair of Losses
April 5, 2015

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Boise State's sand volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Sunday in Sacramento, Calif., opening the day with a 4-1 loss to 13th-ranked Pacific, followed by a 3-2 loss to Sacramento State. The pair of Laney Hayes and Taylor Murphey swept both of their matches on court four to lead the Broncos. Boise State finished the weekend 3-3 recording its first victories of the season, while improving to 3-8 overall.

"I am really pleased with the way we played this weekend," said coach Shawn Garus. "I though that Sarah (Baugh) and Sierra (Nobley) had a great week going 5-1. Laney (Hayes) and Taylor (Murphey) were solid today and won some big matches for us. Unfortunately, we struggled a little today and did not have a lot of breaks go our way. I was pleased with the way we fought against Sacramento State, I thought we played hard but things just didn't go our way."

The Broncos took on the Pacific Tigers in the opener on Sunday splitting the first two matches played. Hayes and Murphey gave the Blue and Orange some early momentum defeating the Tigers' Maycie LaBass and Megan Birch 21-18, 21-14.

Two pairs took their opponents to three sets before falling. Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley rallied from one set down to tie it before falling 25-23, 14-21, 15-10 at No. 2 pair. Katelyn Kinghorn and Aly Duffin also went to three sets opening with a win in the first set before falling in the final two for a 16-21, 21-18, 15-11 defeat.

In the second match of the day Boise State lost a heartbreaker to Sacramento State that saw four of the five pairs go to three sets before it ended with the Hornets on top 3-2. Hayes and Murphey claimed the first Bronco victory of the match winning 22-20, 15-21, 15-6 on court four.

The second win came from Baugh and Nobley at No. 2 pairs where they defeated Madeline Cannon and Morgan Stanley 21-12, 22-20. That was the fifth win of the weekend for the tandem which is now a team-best 6-5 on the year.

The three matches that the Broncos lost to Sacramento State all went three sets and were decided by two or three points in the third. It came down to the No. 1 pairs where Hannah Hubbard and Maddy O'Donnell battled Sac State's Kayla Beal and Sloan Lovett back and forth before being edged 14-21, 21-17, 15-12.
