Boise State Falls 4-1 to No. 9 Saint Mary's in Inaugural Match

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Izzy Miller and Maddy O’Donnell became the first Broncos to win a sand volleyball match, but Boise State fell 4-1 to 9th-ranked Saint Mary’s in the program’s inaugural match on the opening day of the Sacramento State Invitational on Friday. The Freshmen duo won the first match of the day at No. 5 pairs before the Gaels rallied to win the final four contests. This was the first match in history for the Boise State program while Saint Mary’s, a second-year program, improved to 5-0 on the season.

The match opened with the number four and five pairs as they played only two matches at a time. The day started bright for the Broncos in their inaugural match as freshmen Maddy O’Donnell and Izzy Miller recorded the first pairs victory in program history when they defeated Saint Mary’s Maegan Conroy and Milena Popovic at No. 5 pairs 21-14 and 33-31 to put Boise State up 1-0.

The No. 4 pairs was a battle as well, as Aly Duffin and Katelyn Kinghorn lost a heartbreaking three-set match to the Gaels’ after winning the first set. Saint Mary’s Rachel Gillcrist and Mileva Popovic rallied to down the Broncos but it took extra points during the third set to get the job done as the Mustangs won 17-21, 21-19, 17-15 to even the match at one all.

Saint Mary’s clinched the team victory when they swept the final three pairs. Boise State’s Laney Hayes and Sarah Horton put up a fight before falling at No. 3 pairs in three sets to Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons 21-6, 20-22, 15-8.

That was followed by the match clinching win in straight sets for the Gaels at No. 2 pairs where Bronco freshmen Kaitlyn Oliver and Sarah Baugh lost 21-14, 21-17 to Kristina Graven and Natalie Loos.

The No. 1 pairs was also decided in straight sets where Alyssa Gammel and Brittany Reardon fell to the Gaels’ top duo Jordan Shaw and Samantha Tinsley 21-12, 21-14.

Saint Mary’s extended its win streak to five matches with the win, while the Broncos fell to 0-1.
