PORTLAND, Ore. - Boise State beach volleyball completed an opening weekend sweep with a 3-2 victory over Stanford Sunday afternoon at Portland, Ore. Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley brought in the match clinching victory at No. 2 pair as the Bronco tandem went undefeated at 3-0 this weekend. Boise State also recorded wins from Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn at No. 4 pair, as well as from Laney Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda at the fifth position.

The Broncos closed the weekend perfect going 3-0 versus Portland, Oregon and Stanford. Next up for the blue and orange is the Stanford Tournament next weekend where Boise State will face Saint Mary’s (Calif.), a rematch with Stanford, followed by contests with Arizona State and Cal.

“I am pleased with the way the team competed on opening weekend going undefeated,” said coach Shawn Garus. “We showed a lot of composure out there this weekend and beat some good teams. I think our experience playing in the sand for three years showed for us. The four pairs that had experienced players did really well with three going undefeated and the fourth going 2-1. The one pair where neither player, Sabryn (Roberts) and Katie (Hall), had ever played competitively in the sand struggled a bit, but they showed their toughness and improved throughout the weekend, they will get the hang of it. Overall it was a great experience for us. Now we have to carry this success into a very busy nine day road trip starting next weekend at Stanford.”

Boise State opened the Stanford match by taking a 2-0 lead following wins at No. 4 and 5 pairs. Oliver and Osburn turned in the first victory of the day downing Courtney Bowen and Jennifer DiSanto 21-17, 21-16. The duo was one of three Boise State pairs that went undefeated on the weekend at 3-0.

No long after, Hayes and Bulda made it 2-0 Broncos. The tandem rallied from one set down to put away Stanford’s No. 5 pair of Tami Alade and Karina Robinson in three sets 18-21, 21-9, 15-7. The dominating performance in the final two sets kept Hayes and Bulda perfect at 3-0.

The Cardinal pulled even following a pair of victories at No. 3 and 1 pairs, respectively. That setup the decisive contest at No. 2 pair where Baugh and Nobley dispatched Stanford’s Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel in straight sets 21-10, 24-22 to claim the team victory.

In an exhibition match Boise State’s Emily Sullivan and Katie Hall defeated Stanford’s Alexis Froistad and Halland McKenna.
