SACRAMENTO, Calif. (4/3/2015) - Week two of the season started on a positive note for Boise State's sand volleyball team who swept San Francisco 3-2 and San Jose State 4-1 in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday to record the Broncos' first victories of the season. Boise State's top three pairs of Hannah Hubbard and Maddy O'Donnell, Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley, as well as Katelyn Kinghorn and Aly Duffin were undefeated on the day. The victories over the Dons and Spartans improved the Broncos to 2-5 overall on the season.
"I am really pleased with the way we played today and the way we rebounded after last week," said coach Shawn Garus. "It was great to see the victories come at the top positions after they struggled a bit last weekend. I thought Hannah (Hubbard) and Maddy (O'Donnell) have come a long way at No. 1 pair and grinded out two tough three-set wins. It was a great start to a long weekend for us with six matches on the schedule for us."
The Broncos opened the weekend trip against the San Francisco Dons with the team victory being decided on the last match of the day at No. 1 pairs. After splitting the first four contests Boise State's first victory of the season came down on the shoulders of Hubbard and O'Donnell on court one. The duo won the first set then struggled in the second before handing their opponents a three-set defeat 21-18, 8-21, 15-10.
Boise State's victory also included key wins on courts two and three against USF who entered the day at 5-4 overall. Baugh and Nobley recorded their second win of the season in a tightly contested two sets 21-19, 21-19 at No. 2 pairs. They were joined in the victory column by the No. 3 pairs tandem of Kinghorn and Duffin who won a close opening set 24-22 before putting away their Dons opponents with a 21-14 set two victory.
The wins were the first of the season for the teams of Hubbard and O'Donnell, as well as Kinghorn and Duffin.
The second match of the afternoon was against Mountain West member San Jose State. The Broncos began the contest by splitting the first two matches with a 21-18, 21-6 loss on court four and a win on court five by freshmen Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Maddi Osburn 21-11, 21-13.
Boise State picked up momentum with a victory at No. 3 pairs by Kinghorn and Duffin 21-17, 21-12 over SJSU's Allison Meehan and Jamie Hirai. The Broncos' team of Baugh and Nobley recorded their second straight-set victory of the afternoon against the Spartans but were pushed in the second frame before claiming a 21-14, 25-23 win to clinch the team victory.
"For us to get the solid performances out of our No. 2 and 3 pairs speaks alot about how we have improved over the last week in practice," commented Garus. "We learned from last week's experience and worked hard this week leading up to the trip here to Sacramento. I think that Sarah (Baugh) and Sierra (Nobley) have a lot of potential toward the top of our lineup. It was also great to see Aly (Duffin) and Katelyn (Kinghorn) turn things around and get a couple wins today."
Hubbard and O'Donnell went the distance for a second time on Friday tallying a three-set victory over SJSU's Bre Moreland and Nandyala Gama 21-16, 17-21, 15-5 on court one. That made the final score 4-1 in favor of the Broncos over the Spartans.
Both meetings were first time encounters for Boise State which is in its second season. The Broncos will be back in action with two matches on Saturday beginning with California at 11 a.m. (Mountain) followed by Cal Poly at 2 p.m. The three-day road trip to Sacramento will wrap-up on Sunday with two more contests against Pacific and Sacramento State.
