SEATTLE, Wash. - Boise State beach volleyball earned a split on Thursday recording their first victory of the season in the opener over Portland by a 3-2 score, then fell to their host the Washington Huskies 5-0 in the later match. The pair of Kenna Hanses and Skye Southwick led the Broncos at No. 5 pair in both contests tallying a straight-set victory over Portland before falling in a tight three-set match versus Washington.

Also getting wins on the day were Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley at No. 1 pair, as well as Kiley Lewis and Brindl Langley at No. 2 pair, both wins came in the Portland match.

Boise State will face Washington again Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. (Mountain) to close out the weekend’s action for the Broncos.


Boise State recorded its first victory of the season on Thursday in Seattle when the Broncos downed the Portland Pilots 3-2. The blue and orange picked up wins at No. 1, 2 and 5 pairs to clinch the victory as Boise State improved to 1-4 overall.

The teams played two matches at a time beginning with the No. 5 pair and a exhibition match. Kenna Hanses and Skye Southwick started if off with a solid straight-set victory 21-16, 21-11 on court five over the Pilots’ McKenzie Schwan and Liz Reich. Boise State’s Drew Hannemann and Celine Christensen also claimed victory in their exhibition match winning in two sets 21-6, 21-17.

The middle stanza featuring No. 3 and 4 pairs went the way of the Pilots as they rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the team score. Boise State’s freshmen tandem of Kylee Johnson and Maya Watkins battled to the end before getting edged 21-19, 16-21, 15-13 on court four.

In the third set of matches the Broncos came back with wins at the top two positions to claim the team victory over Portland. At No. 1 pair featuring Roberts and Walley the Broncos easily put their match away over Cali Thompson and Tani Stephens in straight sets 21-17, 21-9 to tie the score up at two apiece.

Lewis and Langley rallied from one set down at No. 2 pair to complete the rally and clinch the victory versus Portland. The Bronco tandem beat the Pilots’ duo of Morgan Robinson and Katie Barker in three sets 13-21, 21-18, 15-10.


In the second match of the day Boise State fell to Washington 5-0. Kenna Hanses and Skye Southwick led the Broncos falling in a tough three-set match 17-21, 21-12, 15-11 at No. 5 pair to the Huskies’ Kara Bajema and Emma Calle. Walley and Roberts battled at No. 1 pair but came up short 21-17, 21-17 to Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner as the UW duo closed out the match.
