Boise State Suffers Two Defeats on Friday

STANFORD, Calif. - Boise State beach volleyball opened the 2018 season today with a pair of matches against Tulane and California at Stanford, Calif. The day began with a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Tulane Green Waves, followed by a 5-0 defeat to Cal. With the two defeats the Broncos move to 0-2 on the young season.

Freshman Kiley Lewis and sophomore Jensen Allen recorded the lone break through for the blue and orange on Friday with a straight set 21-18, 21-12 victory over Tulane’s Briana Correa and Lauren Orlich at No. 5 pair.

Boise State had hope for a victory late in the match against Tulane up one set at both No. 1 and 2 pairs but the Broncos could not put it away. Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Brindl Langley took the early lead at No. 2 pair when they won set one in extra points 23-21. However, the Green Waves’ tandem of Tarin Mergener and Ashley Delgado rallied to win the match in three sets 21-23, 21-17, 15-11.

At No. 1 pair Boise State’s Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley battled hard taking a one set lead when they opened with a 21-19 win. Tulane’s top duo of Kaylie McHugh and Madeline Mertz came back on the Broncos to win the match in three sets 19-21, 21-15, 15-12.

California Recap

The second match went to the California Golden Bears of the Pac-12 by a 5-0 score. Lewis and Allen moved from No. 5 pair versus Tulane up into the No. 4 position against Cal where they battled hard but fell in two sets 21-13, 21-11.

Roberts and Walley attempted to rally against their Cal opponents Alexia Inman and Mima Mirkovic after dropping the opening set, but came up short in the end falling 21-15, 21-18 on court one to close the match and day out.

Boise State will face San Jose State first tomorrow morning starting at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain). The Spartans who are now 3-5 overall also dropped a pair of matches on Friday to Arizona State (4-1) and Tulane (3-2). The Broncos will close their opening weekend Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. (MT) against 14th-ranked Stanford.
