BOISE, Idaho-Boise State softball will play 18 games against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams during the 2012 season, including half of last year's Women's College World Series field. The Broncos will play 17 games at home in 2012, hosting two tournaments and two Mountain West series.
The fourth season of Bronco softball starts Feb. 10, against Loyola Marymount and Nevada at the Aggie Stampede in Davis, Calif. It is the second-straight year Boise State will open the season against Loyola Marymount.
Boise State will travel to early-season tournaments in Davis, Calif. (Aggie Stampede; Feb. 10-12), San Diego (Campbell Cartier Classic; Feb. 17-19), Cathedral City, Calif. (Cathedral City Classic; Feb. 23-25), Tempe, Ariz. (Wilson/DeMarini Invitational; March 2-4) and Columbia, Mo. (DeMarini Invitational; March 9-11).
The Campbell Cartier Classic pits Boise State against three top-25 teams from the final 2011 RPI rankings. The Broncos face UCLA, Washington and Notre Dame on consecutive days in San Diego. The following week Boise State will see 2011 WCWS participant Oklahoma and national runner-up Florida at the Cathedral City Classic before traveling to a tournament hosted by defending national champion Arizona State. The Broncos will play the Sun Devils March 2.
The early-season road swing concludes in Columbia, Mo., where the Broncos will face reigning WCWS participant Missouri twice on its home field.
Boise State will defend its home field for the first time March 15, against Minnesota when it starts an 11-game home stand. The Golden Gophers and a trio of regional rivals make up the field coming to Mountain Cove Softball Field for the SpringHillSuites Invtational #1 (March 15-19). The Broncos will face Portland State and Idaho State twice, as well as one game against Utah State.
The following week, four more teams come to Boise for the SpringHillSuites Invitational #2, March 22-25. The Broncos host Seattle, UT San Antonio and Weber State. Mountain West foe New Mexico will also attend the tournament, but Boise State will not face the Lobos until conference play.
The Broncos enter the season with a 15-game home winning streak, tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the country.
The nonconference slate wraps up with five road games. Boise State will play Portland State once (March 27), Oregon three times (March 28-29) and Idaho State once (April 4).
UNLV (April 13-15) and New Mexico (April 27-29) will travel to Mountain Cove Softball Field during the Broncos' inaugural season in the Mountain West. Boise State will travel to Colorado State April 20-22, and San Diego State (May 4-6) to close the season. There is no conference tournament in the Mountain West.
Mountain Cove Softball Field will play home to 32 games during the 2012 season, including 15 neutral-site games during the SpringHill Suites Invitationals.
