BOISE, Idaho-Boise State softball Head Coach Erin Thorpe announced Sunday, Ashley Palmer of Peoria, Ariz., signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Broncos. Palmer is currently a senior at Desert Mountain High School, where she pitches and plays first base.
"Ashley brings that power bat that we are looking for in each class," Thorpe said. "With our philosophy of building a strong offensive team, Ashley will be able to come in contribute right away."
Palmer earned one letter at Desert Mountain, arriving prior to last season, under head coach Rick Sharp. She played in all 31 games in 2011, starting 29. The junior led the Wolves to a ninth-place finish at the AIA 5A Division II State Tournament. Palmer batted .421 with 40 hits, including 16 for extra bases. She led the Wolves with six home runs and 42 RBI. Palmer also held a 1.85 earned run average and had an 8-1 record as a pitcher. Against Mesa High School, she tossed the third no-hitter in Desert Mountain history. Palmer earned first-team all-league and all-region honors, and was named all-state.
Prior to Desert Mountain, Palmer attended Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz., as a freshman and sophomore. She started all 43 games she played at Mountain Ridge, including 31 as a freshman when she was named first-team all-league and all-region. Palmer led the Mountain Lions at the plate and in the circle in her first year. She batted .385 and recorded team highs in home runs (five) and RBI (29) while posting a 2.00 ERA with 165 strikeouts.
Palmer plays for Hotshots Gold and coach Keith Householder on the travel-ball circuit. Hotshots Gold advanced to the Premier National Championship the past two summers, finishing eighth in 2010.
Palmer is a three-year member of the honor roll in high school.
