BOISE, Idaho-Boise State softball opened its fall campaign with two road victories against Northwest Nazarene. The Broncos took on the Crusaders for the first time Friday, Sept. 24, and wrapped up the two-game set Tuesday, Sept. 28.
Head coach Erin Thorpe and the rest of the Bronco staff is using the fall schedule to meld the returning roster with six newcomers for the 2011 season. It is also a time to test out players at new positions and different spots in the batting order.
"We enjoy the opportunity to play scrimmage games in the fall because it gives us an opportunity to see our players in action," Thorpe said, "and it gives the new team members an opportunity to showcase their talents and their versatility. In our fall games, we do not have substitution rules and do not play with a typical nine batter line-up. The most important thing we focus on in the fall is growing our knowledge of the game and improving our skills in game-like situations."
The Broncos finished in third-place in the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament in 2010, the program's second year of existence.
Boise State will play the final six games of its fall schedule at home at Mountain Cove Softball Field. The action gets started with a double-header Saturday, Oct. 2, against College of Southern Idaho. The first game starts at 11 a.m., and admission is free.
The Broncos will host two games Sunday, Oct. 3, against North Idaho College, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The final two games of the fall will be played Sunday, Oct. 10, against College of Idaho with the first game set to get underway at 1 p.m.
