BOISE, Idaho – Back-to-back homers by Kathy Cox and Christina Capobianco sealed the deal for the “Blue” team in the Boise State intersquad game on Wednesday. The “Blue” team took the game 3-2 over the “Gray” team.
The consecutive round-trippers came in the top of the seventh after the Gray team took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kellie Caplan lined a single up the middle to score Kelly Sweeney from second to take the Gray team’s first lead of the day. Blue pitcher Allie Crump had retired 11 straight batters before Sweeney’s single to lead off the sixth.
Crump recorded six strikeouts in the complete game victory in a day of impressive pitching. Aubray Zell tossed three innings for the Gray team, allowing only one run and working out of a bases loaded jam in the first. Newcomer Lela Work tossed the final four innings for the Gray team and retired the first seven batters she faced. Work was one out away from the victory before giving up the back-to-back home runs in the seventh.
Work also ripped an RBI-single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Jessi Hanna had given the Blue team the lead with a ground-rule double to left center in the top half of the frame.
The Broncos head up to Selah, Wash. on Saturday to take on the defending national champion Washington Huskies in a doubleheader. The Broncos will also play a doubleheader against Northern Idaho on Sunday in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho.
