BOISE, Idaho - Boise State’s newest athletic program, softball, has added two more players to the inaugural roster for the 2008-09 season. Head coach Erin Thorpe announced today the signing of two talented junior college transfers to national letters of intent. The newest Broncos are Laeha Hill a 5-6 outfielder from Vacaville, Calif. and Melissa Hartkop a 5-7 infielder from Fairfield, Calif. The duo are longtime friends and current teammates at Sacramento City College in California. Today’s new additions bring the current roster total to 16, seven JC transfers and nine true freshmen.
Hill is the fifth junior college All-American to sign with the blue and orange for the inaugural year. While Hartkop is the first transfer to come that will be a sophomore in eligibility. Both are potent offensive players ranking high in their league for runs, hits, and RBIs, in addition, they are also solid in defensive fielding. The two have been friends ever since playing club ball together for the Nor Cal Elite of Fairfield, California.
The new additions continue to add depth and experience to Thorpe’s first team which is set to start play next February. The team should benefit from the balance between the mix of transfers and high school talent in the first season. Recruiting continues for coach Thorpe who is in the process of building a solid foundation for Boise State’s newest athletic program.
