FRESNO, Calif. Freshman Kelly Sweeney was named to the All-Tournament team for the 2009 WAC Softball Championship on Saturday. The second baseman was the standout-performer in the Broncos 8-4 upset win over San Jose State on Wednesday.
Sweeney led the Broncos with a .333 average in the tournament and four clutch RBI. She came up huge against the Spartans in the Broncos only win of the tournament. "As the season went along, Kelly developed into one of our most clutch hitters. She had several big hits for us this season and she carried that with her into the tournament,” said head coach Erin Thorpe.“For a startup program to get a win in the conference tournament in our first year is absolutely great and we likely wouldn't have done it without Kelly's performance. To have the conference recognize a member of a startup program with an All-WAC tournament team selection is truly a great honor and Kelly deserved it."
