May 9, 2014

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State softball signed junior college shortstop Teauana Hughes to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Erin Thorpe announced Friday. Hughes is currently finishing her sophomore year at Mt. Hood Community College and is a native of Clatskanie, Ore. She bats and throws left handed.

"We are very excited to welcome Teauna to our program," Thorpe said. "She is extremely athletic and has incredible power at the plate. She has all of the tools to play anywhere on the field and hit anywhere in the lineup. We are definitely looking forward to adding a player of Teauna's caliber to next year's roster."

Hughes was the 2013 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) South Region Player of the Year as a freshman after leading the league with 21 home runs and 60 RBI. She was also named NFCA NWAACC All-America, All-NWAACC South Region First Team and All-NWAACC Tournament. The Saints were 39-7 in 2013, including 16-4 in conference play. They finished third in the NWAACC Tournament.

This year Hughes and the Saints are 34-2 with a 16-2 mark in conference games and in position to earn the top seed in the NWAACC Tournament. Individually, Hughes leads the NWAACC with 18 doubles and ranks in the top five in batting average (.509), home runs (14), RBI (57).

"I chose Boise State because I heard nothing but good things about the softball program," said Hughes. "Playing at the Division I level has always been a dream of mine and I believe that Boise State was the perfect fit in every way."

Hughes was a four-time all-state selection at Clatskanie High School, including being named Oregon 3A All-State First Team. She guided the Tigers to three-straight Lewis and Clark League championships in her final three seasons. Hughes was tabbed the Lewis and Clark League Player of the Year as a junior in 2011 and was a first-team all-league performer all four seasons. She hit .645 with seven doubles, 10 triples and two homers the year she was named player of the year.

Hughes was also a letterwinner in basketball, soccer and volleyball at Clatskanie. She was a three-time all-league choice in basketball.

The 2014 NWAACC Tournament will be held May 16-19, at Owens Sports Complex at Delta Park in Portland, Ore.
