Torrez Takes Home MW Player of the Week

May 6, 2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State junior Hailey Torrez was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the week of April 28-May 4, the conference announced Tuesday. Torrez was 8-for-15 (.533) with two home runs and nine runs batted in, leading the Broncos to a 4-0 record on the week. It is the first MW weekly award for Torrez and the third for Boise State this season.

Torrez slugged 1.000 for the week and also drew two walks for a .588 on-base percentage. She scored six times while hitting No. 3 in the order as Boise State won a nonconference game against Idaho State and swept a MW series from New Mexico to climb into a first-place tie in the standings with Fresno State.

Torrez started the week with a 4-for-5 performance Tuesday, at Idaho State, tying the school record for hits in a game. She singled in her first three plate appearances before smashing a three-run home run in her fourth trip to the plate. Torrez scored three times in the game.

The series against New Mexico began with a 2-for-4 game in the opener, driving in a pair of runs and scoring once. She singled in the first to push across the first run of the game before stealing home to score herself. She also had an RBI double in her second at bat. The quick start gave her a streak of reaching base safely in 12 of her last 13 plate appearances.

Torrez stayed hot in game two, striking for a two-out grand slam in the second inning. She singled later in the game for her fifth-consecutive multi-hit game. With four RBI, it was also the fifth-straight game the junior had driven in multiple runs.

In the finale, Torrez drew a pair of walks and scored once.

She started two games as the designated player, one at catcher and one at third base. While catching, Torrez threw out a runner trying to steal, her sixth caught stealing of the season.

Nationally Speaking
Torrez was also among 19 softball players in the country recognized by the NFCA for having an outstanding week. Boise State pitcher Rebecca Patton also made the list. Patton was 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 20.2 innings last week.

Only twice before had a Boise State student-athlete made the honorable mention list on the NFCA National Player of the Week release (Allie Crump in 2011 and Makenna Weir in 2013). Georgia pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson took the top nod with National Player of the Week accolades.
